What appears to be asbestos was used on our cars to shield from the exhaust manifold heart. You will find it on the starter sheild and, in the case of the Bora, between the rear exhaust and the spare tire.
What have others used as an alternative for this material?

Due to the enormous amount of heat damage I suffered getting my Bora home from Oklahoma City via Denver with that blasted air pump in place I sought to build much better heat shields and more of them.
I had them custom made from patterns I supplied to the sheet metal shop. These were double wall with welding cloth sandwiched between the walls utilizing all stainless hardware and one flat nut as a spacer
Then the edges were sealed with a high temp silicone caulk. They look stunning if not original in the car. This was 1989 so the laws weren't quite so crazy just yet about the asbestos disposal so I used a hose to to turn the old asbestos into a slurry and NO dust and just disposed of it in the trash.

Quite honestly I not sure what material will stand up to the heat that comes off of those heaters WO another wall heat shield there?
Don't forget the gas tank shield. I just out better insulation behind a new single wall piece of brushed SS utilizing the original as a pattern. But since I doubt you're going to be using SS just put the newer insulation with a much higher R factor behind the old one.

Then there's the shield for shift link rod under the LH headers, it's full of asbestos too and an effective and long lasting heat shield is necessary otherwise the constant heat will fry the volatiles in the grease of those slide/needle bearings.

There's a YT video by #27 of a yellow Bora in which he bemoans the nature of the shift linkage. I suspect that car doesn't have it set up correctly because when it is it's just wonderful.

That's what Maserati did for their Ghibli Open Cup racing series. Apparently it doesn't work over cast iron exhaust manifolds. They cracked and I had to get entirely new manifolds. They did look amazing though. That car now has flat shield to block the radiant heat. It's about that can be done as you do need air to circulate otherwise they just crack. In fact, one part of the manifold comes within 1/2" of the frame and cases that to crack. So I have some thin space age insulation there. My first attempt with the Bora was Jet Hot coating.
That just turned to powder. The last one was some woven ceramic cloth from a NASA supplier in Sunnyvale I think. I wrapped that around the headers in situ and secured with SS wire wrapped around it. Not very presentable looking though.

The Jet Hot and others are just ceramic paint that is baked. It is more esthetic than a thermal solution. The only coating worthwhile is plasma sprayed zirconia like zircotec among others.

Owners today and those in period of many low volume specialty cars have to do the engineering that the factory didn't do. Poor cooling system, HVAC, electrical, heat shielding, etc. Pantera people know this better than anyone.

No better than this person. I'm very familiar with all the issues the pantera folks faced once they began running those cars @ serious high speeds at races like the The Silver State in Nevada.
