This morning upon inspection of my engine bay, i came across a loose piece of piping, running from the top of the inlet manifold to the big tubes against the firewall.

Any idea what the function of this hose is? There is no leak as apparantly somebod tried to plug it ...

I'm guessing that pipe is what stops your coolant system blowing up when the engine is heating up.... That's why the tank is called an "expansion tank".

Might be a bad move to block it. That top pipe (9) is probably one of the hottest parts of the system before it is cooled down by the radiators.

    It's a return hose, don't block it

Ok, so i guess that will mean a new upper pipe against the firewall because the connection for the hose is definitely broken off .

That hose allows air pockets to return to the header tank where the air belongs.

That's no uncommon. You can drill the hole, tap it and then screw in a brass barb fitting. Easy job with the engine out. More fiddly with it in (but not impossible)

Engine has to come out anyway, because the car has been in storage since 2013 ;) Ok, it has been started every couple of months, has been moved around, etc... but hasn't been registered or went for a decent drive since...
