I ran this poll/choice in the Rolex forum and got the reaction I expected, but wanted to see the thoughts here with likeminded car/ferrari/watch lovers.
I have an opportunity to pick up the YG Le Mans Daytona, NIB 2025.
    (Grey deal, not from AD)
Being a big Motorsport fan (F1) and overall car fanatic, it’s a no brainer! The history, the beauty that the YG Le Mans Daytona is (IMO), exclusivity, etc…It would be a top piece in my collection.

However, being the price that it is, it wouldn't be a straight purchase, I’d be trading what I feel is also a car guys'/ferrari fan/watch collector's no-brainer pinnacle piece in my collection….Rose gold Richard Mille 72-01

The RM is worth $250-$280k…. The new gold Rolex Daytona is worth $50k I believe…. You see Daytona’s more often but personally I think for me I’d wear the Daytona more. I’d freak out having $250k on my wrist! I hardly wear my AP Royal Oak Offshore due to price these days.

    Thank you

When I travel to races, car events, places where high-end watches are prominent, etc.… I definitely see a ton of Daytonas, and a few RM’s… But I have never once seen the Le Mans Daytona in the wild.
Yes, the RM is worth that on the secondary market, while the MSRP is a bit lower. The Daytona MSRP is $50k +/- …secondary market is $240-$270k
Both are above retail, but the Daytona is 5X retail. Lot of hype involved but the Daytona may hold that value long term, due to exclusivity , 1year run, etc…
Who knows….not much rational when it comes to 6 figure watches.
Reminds me of Ferrari… Everyone will argue the good and bad, everybody will have their favorites, everybody will argue value, etc.… Very similar

Ultimately this is a decision you have to make as everyone will have different opinions. I've sold a couple of Le Mans Daytonas and while they're nice watches, I personally don't think the different bezel, dial, booklet and lower production are worth the $200k premium. But the emphasis there is on personally as that's my opinion. Rolex never discloses production numbers so while it is a very low production timepiece, you don't know exactly how limited it is.

For that reason I lean towards keeping the RM and just getting a "regular" gold Daytona if that's what you want.

Also, the yg Le Mans should be around $250k and the RM slightly higher. You can always PM me for more detailed info if you want.

RM. having spent almost a decade in the watch industry, I can say there is nothing innovative about the 4130 movement in the current generation of the daytona and that the entire value of that watch is in the marketing and hype around it.

to be completely frank, I'm not even a big fan of RM, but between the two I'd keep the RM all day every day.

I just picked up a RM 67-01, their thinner version or extra flat as RM calls it. I didn't think I would like it but actually I love it. The more I saw folks with Daytonas in various metals the more the RM sticks out in a good way. I would recc keeping the RM but in the end its a personal choice.

You have a lot of Rolex… I’d keep the RM and trade other Rolex to get this one.

Unless you are changing your style and getting rid of the art on your arm, keep the RM!

The RM suits YOU in addition to being distinctive, the Rolex is very pretty but it blends in with every other round watch.

As an example, each of my railroad pocket watches are unique and special to me, the extent my wife can tell them apart is that there all the same, except some are in white cases and others are in yellow cases - otherwise they're the same - they are the antique version of Rolexes.

The RM stands out irrespective of value.

    Good luck with your decision.

    Regards,

    Art S.

I gotta go with the RM. The LM Daytona is the current hype watch, imo too much downside on the Daytona at the current values than the RM. If you're not in a hurry, I'd wait another 1 or 2 years to see where both are in the market.

I’ve thought of many scenarios with and without either piece, just talking about watches in general. Sometimes I think it’d be “easier” to just add a bunch of top tier Rolex, or a couple AP or PP instead. There’s some judgement, innuendos, being hyper vigilant, etc…. (I know, first world problems) that come with these pieces as well.

If that's really an issue, more people know what a Rolex is, therefore more risk from a Rolex. Frankly, if you're worried about getting your hand lopped off, get a pocket watch... :^)

As a watch guy I'd go with the Daytona. The RM to me is just not that pretty of a watch. Its like a choice between a 330GTC ( Daytona ) and a SF 90 (RM) I'd go with the 330 GTC each time..... I know RM's are all the rage in the super wealthy area, but as for actual looks, its not pretty, they are hard to read the time on etc... but that is me.

    Tom,

I consider a watch a personal expression. The RM isn't for me, I'm guessing you feel the same.

While I prefer 330s (have a GT, not a GTC - wanted the space) over Daytonas, RL drives modern - it's not about value, its about style/sensibility.

Have you looked at RL's posts? See below. The RM suits HIM much better than any Rolex.

    Regards,

    Art S.

Talking my language now... I shouldn't wear high end watches for work. It's a bad look and bad business when visiting customers and at the office. Same thing driving a Ferrari into work or a customer. I am sure some of you in other work fields do not have this issue.

So for me when I was looking over my collection back in 2021 and prices were soaring I had 14 high end Swiss watches. Most I had not wore in a year or more. I sold them all off but kept 2...Rolex Sea Dweller and AP ROO. I hardly wear them anymore either due to theft out in public or work. I can get away more with the AP but I've noticed more people who are not really watch people know AP now and will comment on mine when I wear it. Ultimately there are very few places to wear them these days unless I am going to dinner in an high end area near me.

If that's a thing, just go vintage. Yes it's a different driving experience (in a vintage car/Ferrari) but it's no less fun, you can drive it to work/clients and no hate; heck, thieves can't even steal it since none of them can drive stick... :^)

Regarding watches, vintage does the same thing - it's not on the thieves radar. An old Patek exploding numbers curvex is cool, funky and 'dangerous' with the radioactive lume and lack of waterproofing (risk of damage to the dial/movement) but it's fun:

At the end of the day, we need to figure out what's important to us and which toys make us happy. I think the RM looks cool on RL, and he seems to have a cool modern (relatively, compared to me... :^) ) Ferrari. To me that suggests a particular taste.

That said, he just got married, so maybe it's time for a minivan and a Rolex... ;^)

    Regards,

    Art S.

PS. I think I'm having more fun with this thread than RL is.

Really really appreciate all the feedback everyone! Its been great getting everyone’s input, perspective, etc…
It has proved just how personal, like which Ferraris we are passionate about …modern vintage, etc….others are about different hobbies/interests/passions.
I’ve decided to go with plan C :)
After much thought and pondering my collection, where I want it to go, where I’ll eventually be, what my core likes have been in the past, what I’ve come back to a few times, stop paying big $$$ for hype and go with what I know, and not worry about what others may think . I Jettisoned the RM, didn’t get the LM but added…4 Rolex to the collection (only 1 I’ve never owned) got a new PT baguette Daytona back (let that one go when I got the RG RM), YG og John Mayer, blue dial WG GMT, yellow OP41.
Round and round we go in this crazy hobby. Still have Panerai, Speedy, Monaco, G-Shock, etc…I think I’ll just be adding maybe more PP or AP going forward. Thanks again all ! It’s been an awesome thread!

Nice! Sold one watch and bought 4 new ones all in the span of a weekend, love it. The platinum Daytona is such a special watch, and the others are great too. Now we need some pictures!
