That's a very wealthy area too. Back then patriotic Americans let things go for a good cause. That looks like 3000-4000 feet off the ground. No jets yet, early B36's so just vibration.

Christian- No P-51Ds in 1941.

 

P-51 has Colorado National Guard markings. I would guess late 1940s or early 1950s.

 

Don- Affirmative, likely a 1944/45 build. Unfortunately, the Guard wiped out the original serial number.

P-51 Stang Evil was owned by Mike Bertz an Air Force flight surgeon. I met him many years ago at the Reno Air Races. We often talked about who would own their Mustang the longest and when he would decide to sell his. He owned it 46 years. I am at 36 so far. I am not 100% sure but I think the name was one he made up.

Collateral damage they says... How many of them fall down for nothing?

 

"In a rare accident, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress in a lower group of a U.S. 8th Air Force formation attacking Berlin, Germany, swung under an upper group just as the Bombardier released his bombs" : r/wwiipics

The B-17 pictured was "Miss Donna Mae II", s/n 42-31540. The plane dropping the bombs was "Trudy", s/n 42-97791. May 19, 1944.

The entire crew of Miss Donna Mae II was killed.

MACR witness statment:

This aircraft was hit by a 1000 lb. bomb from an aircraft flying overhead in our high squadron. The tail section of this aircraft was broken off and the aircraft went down in what appeared to be a straight nose dive. One wing was observed to fall off when the aircraft was about 13,000 feet. Two (2) chutes were observed. This accident occurred directly over the target on signal of bombs away.
