Yeah he may have been on vacation or something, last evening he got back to me and I am happy to say they I now have printed operating instructions for the unit. Not the install, I used the YouTube video for that but the actual operation manual.
Great write up… you’ve tempted me. I was content with my invery connector for streaming of music with Bluetooth.
Thanks for the write up. So far I’ve found lots of quirks, but once you get through everything it works pretty well.
A little late to this thread...so maybe this will help the next guy. I found a local installer who recommends this https://naviks.com/c-1149762-carplay-android-auto.html for my 2022 Portofino M, for those who do not want to buy direct from China. The installer states they install them in Ferrari all the time. He quoted $2800 for parts and labor. which I will gladly pay as I do not have the time nor desire to try and do it myself.
An update on the FRI unit, I found a mobile installer who fitted the unit on my driveway for a very reasonable labour cost (here in the UK). It works great, the only minor quirk is a slightly clunky transition when switching from CarPlay back to full Ferrari display, e.g. I haven't found a way to enable the OEM passenger display panel whilst in CarPlay. But still a very worthwhile and cost effective way to add CarPlay if your car doesn't have it.
Hello! I purchased the CarPlay module for the 458, dropped the car off at audio shop this morning. I then received a call about an issue with video cable. It appears that one is 5 pin and the other is 4 pin on factory cable. Any recommendations or did they miss something? Thanks!
I took a decent look at this and eventually found out that it only works as an FM transmitter to the factory radio. So, in theory you can use it with the CarPlay installation but not both at the same time as you’d have to switch to radio. Hope that makes sense.
If I remember correctly my installer had the same problem and contacted the vendor - they make different versions/cables and they need to send you the right one.
Hi! So I have two issues with my aftermarket CarPlay interface, hope someone can help. First issue: sound quality. For some reason, the CarPlay interface that I bought came with a Bluetooth iPod dock adapter”, so the only way to make sound play thru the speakers is choosing the iPod as an audio source. I though the interface itself would have a Bluetooth input, and in fact it has, but sound doesn’t play thru the speakers when I choose that Bluetooth connection on my iPhone. I have to connect to the “fake bovee interface” that came with the kit to play music. For that I had to buy a second hand iPod cable (as my car didn’t have one) and plug it in the pre installed cable that is hidden under the dash. Ok, that way I’ve been listening to the CarPlay music for a couple weeks now, but sound quality is so, so poor (some frequencies won’t even play, like most vocals…). So, my first guess was “maybe this Bluetooth bovee type interface is very low quality”, so I bought another iPod Bluetooth interface on Amazon to give it a try, but now oem menu won’t let me choose iPod source (second issue here), even pressing and holding up or down to activate or deactivate the iPod menu (in fact, I can’t deactivate the menu, it’s always stays on as long as I have something connected to the iPod cable).
That’s strange. The KKS unit I have hooked right into the head and I threw away my BOVEE. Everything streams directly through the CarPlay on the screen.
can you please let me know what active connections you have? I.e. WiFi + bluetooth both connected to the new interface + disabling factory Bluetooth?
I didn’t do the install, but I know that I no longer needed the BOVEE for everything to work. The car auto syncs to my phone every time I start it.
I purchased the CarPlay unit from China and installed it myself. There were no instructions other than the YouTube video which has some errors and omissions. My unit functions, but I do not have any sound. I followed the “enable iPod” video, but the iPod never comes up on the display as shown in the video. I have been waiting for an answer from tech support since July 16th and sent a video as requested. No solution offered so far. I am using the car with Waze which works fine, but no audio at all. Does anyone have instructions or suggestions to enable iPod?
same thing happened to me. You just need to make sure to plug an iPod or iPod Bluetooth adapter to the iPod cable you already have in your car, as soon as the car recognizes there is an “ipod-type” device connected, the iPod option will show in the menu.
I had tried this and it didn’t work. Just tried again and no luck, although I am using a 30 pin to lightening adapter and an iPhone 12. This is my old setup that did work before I put the CarPlay system in. Still no answer from these guys.
Just found out that you also need to have the iphone connected via bluetooth to the adapter, so as soon as: 1. Bluetooht device is connected to the car 2. Phone is connected via bluetooth to the device Car will recognize the ipod input. At least thats how it works in my car. By the way, just replaced my cheap bluetooth adapter with an INVERY dual adapter, and music quality is much better. Not perfect, but it works.
