is PPF a points loser?

Ask yourself, did the the car in question originally have "ppf"(?).
If not, I'd imagine any experienced judge should/would deduct something, at least if authenticity/originality was to be objective of the judging criteria.

 

Out of curiosity, I looked at the FCA website for concours guidelines. https://ferrariclubofamerica.us/concours-documents/

In the link Exterior Maximum Deductions, the IACPFA document (attached) seems to contemplate that unobtrusive protective film is a -0 point deduction, messy/discolored film is a -1 point deduction, some vinyl colored wrap is -2 point deduction and major use of colored vinyl wrap is a max -5 point deduction.

I don't have any experience judging or having a car judged under IACPFA guidelines, nor do I know whether the same rules apply to vintage and modern cars, so YMMV.

 

When I asked this question some years back, the answer was 0 point and no discussion of what year the car was.

 

I’ve yet to see unobtrusive protection film on any car, so it’s probably a good thing I’m no longer* a IACPFA guideline judge, but do think any who doesn’t see or find them unobtrusive is probably not qualified to be one.

* There are number of other reasons but that’s a different conversation and not something I wish to air out here.

Many or most of the International Ferrari concours judging is conducted by using their guidelines, which I believe are similar to ones used for Pebble Beach judging.

By that stupid standard any car not painted with lacquer would get a 100% deduction for paint.

 

Ross, the concept is we want people to feel comfortable driving the cars. To some people that cannot happen with new or as new paint so it seemed a small deviation from a ridiculous interpretation of original to facilitate all of us being able to see more of the cars.

However I would never suggest that standard is universally applied by all concours organizations.

 

Now there's a stupid comment if I ever saw one.
We all know, or should by now, that lacquer paint materials aren't readily available or usable in most jurisdictions, but adding/applying some modern-day, aftermarket plastic film on top of the paint, regardless of materials used, is nowhere near authentic/original.
So what's next, judges being instructed to allow aftermarket seat covers or WT rubber mats during judging to make "people feel comfortable" ?
Or perhaps allow entrants to keep their favorite car covers on through the entire event and/or just give everyone a Platinum for showing up ? Oh wait a minute ...

And some wonder why I don't want to be associated with all that ?

 

With such an attitude I suspect that the feeling just might be mutual.

 

If my attitude makes an "ambassador"(?) of a National car club feel this strongly, I can't even imagine how dreadful it must feel when another club "ambassador" continually expresses quite rude attitude on this forum ?

Would it make you feel better if I just resigned my membership from FCA altogether ?

Brian explained the IAC/PFA philosophy. It starts with wanting owners to use their car versus being solely trailer queens. So, some items are built in so a car that is utilized will not penalized. I am sorry you are having trouble grasping this philosophy.

 

I should add that the IAC/PFA is not an FCA organization.

Perhaps a market for those with “ perfect “ cars , some that drive to car shows ( like the Bugatti that drove cross country to PB this year ) for disposable material , easily applied and removed.?

 

I’m sorry if I’ve misinterpreted your role in/with FCA, but having read some of your comments about it over the years it always seemed like you being an “ambassador” for it, even if just unofficially. Perhaps an “advocate” would’ve been more appropriate term ?

P.S. As someone who has always (or at least 4+ decades) been a strong “advocate” for as intended use of all cars, modern & vintage, regardless make/model or even ”perceived market value” and having even (privately) discussed about the subject with E.G. and many others familiar with it, I’d like to think I do grasp that aspect of IAC/PFA philosophy, including accepting signs of light/normal(?) use & wear, like minor rock chips, etc on front facia, lower valances & rocker panels or wheel arches, etc.
OTOH, after 10+ years of volunteering as a judge for FCA & other concours events, I learned that many, including FCA, implement number of other (IAC/PFA approved/provided ?) judging guidelines & practices I personally don’t agree with or support, hence my desire to no longer be involved, but as Brian & you (appear to) point out, it’s probably the best & easiest for the club & its status quo since most people don't like a contrarians.

I apologize for having misunderstood your role in FCA as a judge and always assumed a membership is pre-requisite for any such position. Perhaps I should’ve studied the bylines & the small print closer to avoid it.

Well, I'm pleased to hear/read something I do or express makes someone happy.

 

Seemingly good idea, but I believe the concept was experimented with already few decades ago (& even popular for a while) in a form of "Bra".

 

And I always thought, Germany is the world champion in bureaucracy and creating useless offices. Seems I was wrong.

While I believe IACPFA is a private (& international) organization, I hear you, but somehow doubt Germany being anywhere near the world champion in your aforementioned endeavors.

I wouldn't be surprised if during its nearly quarter millennia of existence US has created more laws, regulations & rules, not to mention over-sight bureaucracy for them all than any other society in history of the world.

 

I had one of my twins plastic wrapped, with the clear version. After 10 years, the difference is notable. No complaints from either. No chips at all, good as new.

The other one, alas, is not quite as happy and in need of psychological help...
