My clutch has been sticking more and more. To a point where I just could not unstuck it. I think it is not worn but time and organic OEM material seem to cause that issue.

So the dreaded time of clutch replacement has come.
Will use a Kevlar/carbon per mechanic recommendation. Not OEM.
I will also have a lighter smaller starter installed. will save the OEM. OEM seemed to have issues when starting hot after 15mn engine off. Needed to cool for 30mn more. Always been an issue. fixed it once by rebuild but issue crept up again after a few years.

Will have the entire steering looked at and refreshed as needed.

My question to you guys is as the engine will come out, what would you guys recommend I get replaced "while in there". What typically are the weak points to address other than the typical hoses?
    Thinking may be gaskets?

  2. Yes replace hoses, oil lines, fuel lines, motor mounts. Fuel filter. Might consider boiling out the radiators. There is a gear reduction starter, has anyone tried it? https://www.ebay.com/itm/167483988505?_skw=countach+starter&itmmeta=01K4EBJTQ8555XTHDTMSF5QZDG&hash=item26fed2da19:g:Cd8AAeSw7NRoEOVO&itmprp=enc:AQAKAAAA8FkggFvd1GGDu0w3yXCmi1d4bJszxNUcfN4KeUcTQZMMZ37DNLZ+po79Do+xcJ/AmrN+kaadRtQDkFRm+Sr+diG1Dac7tiWV3fyj/K9v8k4zyUlauMRUKZhCBSbXRvrI1LfGi88zZjiZ7mqFDIYwRjNN8KK5iyq5Y+sobvviV59sEaq1/D304FAdi8vEjIYp6KCscCUwRrFV9Ekj+ZPxOXnkxD6jfLltFuS1W4TtcdOOyKwG2AihEtqJ8g6k1ei6/xSiLT5IKQDPZaZD80tAKmf3WT/GhDjHqgxBX8iARyyxW2ATqjmGdLvQNO4sUCPaNw==|tkp:BFBM5KvLy6Nm

Are you using the factory heat shield on the starter? Mine looks like it is made out of asbestos.
Also I don't know if the timing chain tensioners have to be manually tightened, valve clearance, maybe rebuild the water pump, address any leaks.

I would agree with this list. I personally only focus on OEM parts, even if inferior because I’m a purist, but I would understand if you choose some other options. Curious who will be doing your work?

I dont recall having the heat shield. I’ll check. car is at the shop. but thks for the heads up on what to look for.
Car has been really good to me but it is time to refresh.
I decided to go local to the Paddock in new Britain. They have done lambos, Ferraris including some custom racing Fs.
they currently have a murci to convert from egear to manual with engine out.
Roger for Classic car and former F1 employee is working there.
I agree to oem but some mechanical are just not very reliable if you drive the car.
I may save the old clutch if it can be refurbished.
I will meet with them monday to go over the work and i ll show that starter from eBay. they said they have a direct replace, smaller lighter and better.
I feel confident in the shop, I know the guys and they are 20mn from me so that is a plus. I will be able to monitor the work and be on site on notice.
the engine in and out will be a 40h job. the clutch kit is a bit over 10k

FYI the clutch disc cross references to a BMW disc. A car I worked on had an unreliable starter, it was hit or miss if it worked. Investigating it turned out the starter was fine, the points on the solenoid were shot. The solenoid cross references to a Mercedes one. It is the exact same part number.

    Cheers Jim

  6. I've rebuilt mine twice. The first time the pin rattled right out of the bendix. I've never seen that happen. The second time I misdiagnosed it. It was the ignition switch. IIRC the starter, the bulk of it, is an old Mercedes item (the shop that rebuilt it told me). With a heat shield it should be fine. Even so, I'll try a gear reduction starter next. That one thing has been probably the biggest improvement on an old car that I have ever done. In my experience, from a 70 Mini to a Pantera, if you drive it, starting becomes easy. You will still want a heat shield.

thks. My view as well on the starter. When I go somewhere I dont want to guess if I am gonna have to wait 30 to 45 mn to start again. I guess this does not matter if the car stays in a garage for just exercise drives. but I still drive the car occasionally and casually. I will report back on that mod when done. Probably next season! lol
I'll post picts here. The issue right now is to get the parts and.. the hyper inflated new prices.. Good grief...

  8. Many of the parts are not Lamborghini specific. Like mentioned the clutch disc. You can also have a clutch disc re lined. I’ve done that on other old cars like a TR3 etc. Cheap. The motor mounts are Fiat, etc. The labor is the pricey part . Some parts like the throw out bearing can be rebuilt or upgraded as well.

The kit they ordered includes the throw out bearings. the engine out should occur sometimes next week hopefully.

    Hey Jeff,
yes I have the OEM. Actually the one from the car build at the factory. It was refurbished by Evans in 2001 according to the records, just before I bought the car.
Here is the long term issue per my mechanic: the organic material and the wear tend to make it stick to the flywheel. Especially when the car is driven unfrequently.
At first it is easy to un-stick it. It was happening to me over the past few years after winterizing. I could always un-stuck it. But this month I left the car for 1 month in the garage and it stuck for good.
the new clutch is mechanically vastly superior and has the same feel, much more resilient and way "cheaper" than oem. I see throw out OEM bearings going for 5 to 9K. Insanity.. I get the whole Kevlar/carbon clutch and bearings and flywheel for a bit more. A no brainer if you are open to compromise to Full OEM..

I will keep the OEM clutch and maybe have it refurbished if still good to satisfy the full OEM claims if I ever sell when on my death bed.
I already have a new electronic ignition that has worked flawlessly for 10 years compared to the points prone to moisture and wear. I used to worry about these and had issues with moisture over time.
I am also planning to finally move to Tarox rotors and new 6 piston calipers soon. The current brakes are too scary as I get older and they get older and I am used to newer Porsche and Aston Brembos brakes now... I am also planning that change to be fully reversable.
I have experienced lots of sweating coming very fast on a car that would not move from the left lane highway. I had to brake hard... A very very unpleasant experience..

Since I drive the car I just dont want to worry about mechanical issues and look stupid on the Highway. These improvement will also help me enjoy the car more to what it can do. not to mention that these things are a safety improvement to me for preserving the value of the car by not wrecking it :)

Good to hear from you Patrick. Looks like most everything covered here. I would assume if they work on Countachs then they will inform what must be done, what should be done, and what they find while in there.
My car was relocated April of this year and motor is currently out, apart, and everything being 100% rebuilt including gearbox

Hi Peter, yeah, the good thing is they are a full shop and can make parts from scratch. this may come in handy as I just was there this AM. I am doing a complete suspension and steering refresh. I recall some guys on lambo talk swore by Konis. Any thing newer and better?
the shop is talking about rebuilding them at a specialty outfit. Maybe but if I have something improved, I 'll switch as long as I get the OEM car stance. Latest seem to be bulletproof labeled shocks. I dont know.

Engine out this AM. Will post picts later.
I am gonna ceramic coat the headers inside and out. The OEM look seem to be silver/grey but I saw some black headers. Ceramic coating OK? Black header looks better but OEM?
