308s on BaT

I have the same thought. It makes zero sense to me to buy a fantastic driving machine and not drive it, but I do enjoy that some get preserved so that we can know how to put ours back together right when we need to! If I was mega rich, I'd probably buy two of every car: one to drive and one as a backup/preservation piece, because I'm insane. I would fully 3D scan, photograph, and whatever other technology exists the preservation car.... something like this would be cool if possible at that scale:

Is it attractive? Sure. Would I ever own it? Nope. I am firmly in the Non-Red Ferrari camp, but also firmly believe that sports cars should not be the color of dirt.

I have always loved marrone. It was the color of the first ride I got when I was 15

 

In person, the metal flake (or whatever is in metallic paint) catches light and makes it more a deep bronze. It was a very popular color in the 70's across many different marques (American car companies called it some variation of "bronze," "burnt orange," etc.) and very much "of the time" for these cars.

 

I like it, marrone for Ferrari and sepia for Porsches. Old school goodness.

 

I looked at a 308GTB in Marrone to purchase at one time, I thought that the color brought out the design lines very well. I am in the "I'd rather not have red" category, must be my 'contrarian/march to a different drummer' tendencies.

Ferrari has always offered a palette with wonderful colors yet people still ignore them for "resell red". Much like shields, red doesn't make the car go faster (except off the sales lot). The 308GT4 is a good example of a wide range of excellent color choices yet most have been re-sprayed to red (my car included). IMO, the worst offenders are the classic big 2+2/V12 GT cars in red, elegant lines lost in a blob of red. The 365/400/412 GT 2+2 cars are another example of wonderful range of color options that accentuate the lines and details, red being by far the worst choice, again IMO.

 

I agree there are many colors that you really have to see in person. I looked at a 308 GTB in Grigio and it was one of the most beautiful cars I have ever seen. If I could of fit in it, it would’ve been mine.

$127k - wow.

 

I said it in the BaT thread, but I just don't get it. It's a different color than usual, but otherwise the car is unremarkable and I'd even say rougher than I would expect with only 35K on it. Really wild sale price, IMHO.

 

Colour is great I think, but 127K is a lot.

 

This is another example of a 32k mile car that I would be surprised if it really has 32k miles. Unless the people that drove it wore sandpaper on their ass getting in and out of the car I would suspect odometer shenanigans.

 

It takes 3 seconds to unplug a speedometer on one.

 

The real way to tell is a detailed inspection, including wear and replacement in the interior. Unless there is actual documentation over a long period of time, you have to assume something could be fishy.

Unplugged cars are even worse because the owner doesn't know the maintenance needs and timing.

 

Yeah I've had my speedo and tach out more than I care to count having to send them off for repair. Even if you didn't want to pull it from the guage you could easily disconnect the sensor on the trans... that would probably be easier actually.

My car currently shows 2400 miles. Now is that accurate... LOL no. My guess is it has flipped and it's 102400 miles. But it's difficult to say actual mileage since the service history before I got the car is non-existent. And the speedo was broken so.

I think it was one of those cars that got bought for very little money in the early 2000s and driven like a Honda and then when it stopped working it was parked.

 

Lets not forget that Dino's where unloved at one time...308 is next to pop!

 

Would be nice but I think production numbers will likely keep the 308 from doing anything like the Dino. I think it is something like 3200 Dinos vs 12,000 308s. You can buy a 308 every day of the week, really, and have options.

 

Im done waiting for a non glass 308 to shoot to the moon. It will never happen.

 

Maybe the early carb cars..with 255 bhp..in Europe good ones are $ 100K ish

 

As someone who also owns a Porsche 944 S2, I quit caring a long, long time ago. Classic cars - of any sort - aren't investments; even the "blue chip" vehicles probably only break even when you factor in inflation, maintenance, storage, insurance, auction fees, and - most of all - opportunity costs. At this point, I probably have 2x the value of both my classic vehicles in those first five, and 10x in the last one.

 

Ding ding ding, we have a winner. I'd like to see the car keep up with inflation, so I don't lose a ton of money on it, but ultimately I bought it to enjoy it and nothing is going to stop me from doing that.

Someone just sold a 38 (thirty-eight) mile 95 ZR-1 on BaT for $70K. Big money for one of those. Also MSRP in 95. Think about how much they lost on that car...

I hope you're wrong because Im going down a path on my 308 where originality isn't a consideration.

 

A bit of a contrarian here. I hope that the prices don't shoot up, the current 308 values make it affordable to own and most important, affordable to drive on a frequent basis. How many 246 Dinos do you see driving around just for fun, even 365, 400, 412 gt cars are now regulated to garage queens for wealthy owners. Not so wealthy owners (that would be me) are pushed out of ownership due to skyrocketing costs. Even things like insurance runs up higher due to higher replacement costs. Speculators and flippers are happy but they are just in and out of ownership, not into it for the fun of driving the car whenever they feel like it long term. The same goes for air cooled Porsche's who's valuations have skyrocketed, now not a daily fun driver any more and most people have been forced out of the market. End of rant.
