I use my 1972 246GT on many rallies every year. I have (what I believe to be correct) the non-70 series XWXs. I am thinking of going to the 70 series XRXs or a set of Avons. Has anyone made this change and did it significantly improve grip?

    Thanks as always.

The original OAD is 25.3” for a 205/70R14. This site is helpful to see what street tires are out there https://tiresize.com/calculator/

    I
don’t think Avon makes the CR6ZZ tires in 14”. The Dino “Comp” vehicle here uses 15” Ferrari wheels with Avons.

For a period correct look, Blockley might be an option:

Or a period correct racing tire from Dunlop:

I stand corrected. Looks like Avon offers a rally tire in 185/70R14.

Since most vintage car, including Dino or Ferrari, owners don't seem to drive theirs extensively, let alone hard/spiritedly enough to have/offer an educated comparison advise, my suggestion, however unpopular, would be to acquire second set of wheels and buy both brands of tires, drive each set back-to-back with the same car on same routes, speeds & climate conditions.

Now that would be a real world comparison testing and when all done, perhaps sell the extra of wheels & non-qualifying tires at a discount to one of those garage/trailer queen investors always looking to save money.

I had a set of Dunlop Racing on my ‘69 911. I agree. They’re awful. I replaced them with XWX’s which were game hanging. Are the XWX’s too soft? I have two sets of wheels for my Dino. I’m restoring the original 14” set with new XWX’s and I have the set of 16” Cromodoras with Pirelli P7’s. The 16” size gives you lots of options but I also understand it’s not for everybody! You can see my wife loving it!!

At Goodwood all race with Dunlop Racing. These are tyres that need to heat up in order to work.
If you see them racing, they slide as in the old days.

Good ole Halusa on the fake breadvan, raced Dunlops and they looked and acted the part. His beef was the 'others'
raced on slicks, and he was fried.

I seriously doubt that you will reach proper operating temps. on the road.
Plus, Dunlops will tramline you to death, just drove a car with them and they will do that.
Blockley did not appear to test well (by some journo), but they are raced all over, so there must be something to them.

Tyre salespeople, are that, except for Dougal (maybe) as I do not vouch for anyone on earth except my family, will tell you anything.

Personally, I love the Avons, on a 911, they are a dream, a friend has them on a Daytona
    and they are mahhhvelous.

Matthias, are you going to race 10/10ths your Sebring Dino? If so, then Dunlop is your tyre.
If you are doing parade laps, then stay with Dunlop and both hands on the wheel :)

Call https://rogerkrausracing.com/, in California. He is truly THE racer's tyre purveyor, not a salesman. Go to his site, a veritable racer Bible,
and his reputation is second to none on the West Coast.

Nankang are dynamite tyres but only in 13" and 15". They also look great. Don't bother to find them on the web, as not there, go:
    https://rogerkrausracing.com/pdfpricing/Nankang Porsche Cobra Caterham .pdf

Hoosier, is another option in 14".

    Regards,
    Alberto

Did you take tyre temps? No? then Dunlops are no good.....
It really all boils down to how you drive, and we all do it differently.....
I got a chance to DRIVE (in the hills in LA) and got the D's searing hot, they were great.
But then, your wife will possibly, not enjoy the ride.
    Clearly at jail speed :)

With our vintage cars we are swayed by the aesthetics to communicate period correctness. The handling on any one of our vintage cars are greatly improved with modern tires. My 16” Cromodoras w/Pirellis for example. Bolt on, bolt off spare wheels is the solution. Occasionally tires like the Avons become available but are limited in sizes. I run vintage Dunlop Racing (Thank you Dougal!) on my Brabham BT8 for the proper period look. It had lower profile Avon tires that apparently worked well but the look isn’t right! I still have a spare set to use on the track.
