Nobody believed in Damon Hill, not even his team boss. Frank Williams had already chosen his replacement for the following season. Damon proved them wrong by winning the title against the odds.
he held his own against four teammates who were (or would become) world champions, and still didn’t get the respect he deserved IMO. btw does anyone know how to watch the Sky documentary about Damon here in the USA?
Massively underrated and got into F1 against monumental obstacles. An absolute gentleman and a well deserved World Champion.
it gladdens my heart to see Hill getting appreciation here. The other thing that people forget is after the difficult start for the whole team in 94, then Senna‘s death, Damon as a relative rookie, took the title fight all the way to the last round, and many of us will argue to this day that Schumacher Took him out to win the championship. In some respects he reminded me again of his dad after Jim Clark’s death. Chapman apparently just left Hockenheim after that, and Graham basically had to pull the team together, get them and organized back to base, then the next race and onwards. In a similar way after Ayrton’s death, Damon really pulled hard to lead a team he wasn’t really experience to do, and still nearly won the WDC that year. I honestly believe he is one of the more underrated WDC‘s of all time.
I always had a lot of respect for the Hills, father and son. Both of them reached the summit in F1 through hard graft.
