Canceled our trip due to limited flights in October. 24 hours to get there. switched to Greece, but the azores are still on the list
we tried a number of routes, I’m in SoCal, even the travel agents were surprised. 24 hour flight no matter how we configured it - on the days we needed to travel
My best friend and his wife spent a week there about a year ago and both said the place was amazing, but also that week was enough. They live in Europe so getting there & back was easy for them. In past 45 years they've traveled extensively all over Europe, North & South America, but mostly on budget minded trips. So based on their assessment & experiences by "dustman" & "JOEA2," if traveling from the States, I think combining a visit to Azores with some other European destination would be worth of considering.
We switched to Greece, got this email this morning: Greece announced a new Climate Crisis Resilience Tax (previously known as accommodation tax), that comes into effect this season: The following fees will be in effect from March to October and for hotels are: • 2 euros per night for one or two-star hotels • 5 euros per night for three-star hotels • 10 euros per night for four-star hotels • 15 euros per night for five-star hotels
I wanted to add that just like my wife & I, the couple mentioned above are not "lounge-by-the-pool" type. They (& we) also prefer non-organized tourist activities, like scenic off-the-beaten-path drives/hikes & walks-in-the-cities/town/villages , trying out local cuisines in non-tourist eateries/restaurants, etc.
