Hey folks, I've run into an issue with my 308 where one of my Pertronix ignitors has failed and I'm trying to figure out a replacement.

Looking at the paperwork that came with my car, it seems to have a Pertronix 9MR-183 kit installed in it in 2014, which to my understanding should be a kit for a single distributor trigger conversion.

However, looking at the distributor on the rear bank, which I diagnosed the failure to, there is a single Pertronix module rather than two modules, more similar to the 9MR-182A kit, but with the Pertronix II ignitors rather than the black ignitors in the -182A kit.

Was there an older -183 kit that was installed across distributors or was this potentially some kind of frankenstein setup? It's almost like a mashup of the -183 and -182A kits. I've not been able to find information regarding this online. Does anyone know if I may be able to just order a new -183 kit and replace my one failed ignitor with one of the ignitors in the kit? I'm not completely opposed to just ordering a new kit and installing it all in one of the distributors, but I was trying to avoid making "big" changes to get back up and running.

Thanks for any recommendations y'all can provide!

    Hi,
Unless it was converted to run on only one distributor, then it should have one module per distributor. A second one would be used with an electrical switch to move the timing back when the accelerator was at idle. However, many owners simply unplug this. I'm running two (optical) modules in the same distributor, which has the advantage of using only one set of springs to define the advance curve. With this, I'm sure that both banks always have the same timing. In this setup, the second distributor is a slave to distribute the spark. Hope this helps!

Well the reason I asked the question is that the 9MR-183 kit appears to be specifically made to run on one distributor (with both ignitors in that distributor), and I have paperwork for that part being installed on my car, but it's clearly one module per distributor. So I'm trying to figure out exactly what to order to replace my dead ignitor

9MR-183 is indeed for one distributor/8 cylinders (think just about every 8 cylinder engine). Possibly it was cheaper for the PO to purchase one 9MR-183 kit then install one module in each Ferrari distributor. I would pull out the suspect module, look for a part number on it and then purchase a replacement. A call to Pertronix may be in order.

Yeah unfortunately the part number sticker was worn off the top of my ignitor and also the Pertronix help line wasn’t especially helpful when I called. They said they don’t sell the ignitors separately from the main 9MR-183 kit normally and weren’t sure if one of the modules from another, cheaper kit that only has one ignitor would be the same or not. So I posted this thread in hopes of figuring things out. I think I may just order another 9MR-183 kit and install one of the ignitors and see if it works for me

In the distant pass that's exactly how I ran my 308GTS on the pertronix system. That was SOP and I have never seen cars set up any other way for the exact reason you list.
