F430 Oil Plug and Filter Torque Specs

Hello,
this is a very old thread as I can see and I wanted to put in some information for people regarding F430 oil services. According to OEM service manual released by Ferrari, the torque specs are as follows in NM: Engine oil drain caps 75
Fastening screw on filter screen access flange 6
Oil filter cartridge 30
Use your best judgement when torqueing drain plugs.

 

I was able to torque both the large and small drain plugs successfully to 75NM without fear of stripping threads with OEM copper crush washers.

 

and that still does not mean you "should."

 

DO - NOT tighten the drain plugs to the service manual specified 75nm. I made this mistake recently and ended up ordering both a new pair of pants and a new "Olio Motore" plate that one of the plugs threads into on my 360. Fortunately Hill Engineering makes a significantly cheaper (and likely significantly better) version vs OEM. Even more fortunate was that I didn't strip the other oil drain plug, which would have been hugely expensive!

 

What "should" one do then?

 

I have always done 75nm (55 ft lbs) as specified in the manual. Never had an issue. I will say that after reading almost everyone say this is overly tight, I do get a little nervous now.

I just now tightened mine to 70 nm and it didn't seem like it took that much force and I'm not Hercules. Makes me wonder if my torque wrench is accurate, but it's practically brand new. I have a digital torque meter on order so I'll check it w/ that when it arrives.

 

From my notes…
Tools needed: 19mm hex, 10mm hex, 10mm socket
torque filter to 30Nm or 22 ft/lb, torque drains to hand tight
10 qts 5w40 Pennzoil Ultra
Use new washers as outlined earlier in this thread

 

I didn't see a torque spec in the manual for the gear oil filler cap, it has a copper crush washer, so prob should be significant? anyone know if there is a designated spec for this?

The manual states 60 nm for gear oil filler cap

 

I don’t recall a torque spec when I did it. However, I routinely service my Toyota trucks differentials and the copper washer don’t really require higher specs. They all call for 27-39ft/lb. To me that is mild hand tight with a 3/8 wrench.

 

There you have it! That’s 44ft/lb.

 

Be careful with the differential plug. It is brass and strips super easy (ask me how I know). The torque specs in the manual are crazy high. Order a new plug whenever you change the fluid. They probably aren't torque to yield, but they sure act like it with as tight as you need to tighten them. The spec in the manual is 75nm or 55 ft pounds. Just tighten it until you feel the crush washer slightly deform and then stop. You can see my Oh **** moment in this thread.

Later manuals have it at 48 or so for drain plug .I think 75;was a mistake for sure

60 mm for full.plug

 

Dom can you post a Pic of the later manual specs. I keep things like that taped to my oil cabinet door.

That's not the F430? Point taken though, ok, 48 it is!

 

I am aware .. same plug .. later manual ( 599) .. my point is that it went from 75 to 48 -- which when you look at other car brands... similar size setup ( BMW , MB, etc ) as well as a torque chart .. it is more inline
