:D This one is too good. I only make them public after they threaten scorched earth. ;)

So this is Timothy Gould of The Ryan Companies.

There was initial confusion as he was just asking how to retrieve password and I nicely told him how to do so.

Turns out he was trying to get the mobile app to work, which hasn't been available for a year, isn't available, and of course you can't login.

So yet another grouchy old user that isn't patient with the technology and reacts to some light jokes by going ballistic because of course FerrariChat completely sucks and he's better than anyone else and will tell the world. :D Bring it on Timothy. ;)

tbh I feel like you came across as slightly needesly antagonistic there with "FerrariChat, have you heard of it?"

his reaction was a tad excessive though

put it another way, a 6 year user with 60 posts and contacted me through FerrariChat needs the link? :D this goes back to my teach users to fish, don't catch the fish for them. we get these users, usually old and they just don't want to take 10 seconds and look and they are completely stubborn to learning anything. So you give these guys fish and they are back the next day and the next. There are also different difficulties required, password recovery and the link to FerrariChat is level 1 of 10. :)

Rob famously offers customer service out of a Clint Eastwood movie. No BS here. I suspect the guy was old and didn’t realise a mobile browser meant like a website. And I guess if I had to deal with anonymous customers for years I’d be as grouchy as Rob was.

Still, I would not have banned Fabio from the Maranello forum but that’s another thing.

Out of interest how are the YOY figures for Fchat? I have been here for more than 10 happy years and don’t find it dead but also wonder how much is also going on diversely and less usefully on video comments and social media

The first headwind for the forum has been social networks like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter etc. At some point we decided if you can't beat them, join them and our social pages kill it now. We get over 3 million views a month on Facebook and Instagram, we do make money there, but ultimately we're trying to drive traffic to the forums and classifieds.

    https://www.facebook.com/FerrariChatEnthusiasts/
    https://www.instagram.com/ferrarichatcom/
    https://www.instagram.com/rossoautomobili/
    https://www.instagram.com/rosso812/
    https://www.instagram.com/rossoicona/
    https://www.instagram.com/rosso.f40/
    https://www.instagram.com/rossoclassics/

The second headwind even back to 2012 is SEO and now even AI. Both crawl all our public data, but then try to display all the information within their platform to keep traffic from coming here.

Our forum is not at peak levels that hit around 2013-2014, but 1) we are still very strong and survived while 98% of auto forums have virtually no traffic now. 2) the forum is the "healthiest" it has ever been IMHO based on qualitative measurements like lack of drama, lack of trolls, lack of spam, and quality of postings. 3) although forum specific traffic is down some, overall including social we have more views per month than anytime in our 25 year history.

The business end is good as it has ever been, the focus to grow is not on subscribers and sponsors, but to add more opportunities and value to users buying and selling Ferraris. https://ads.ferrarichat.com/buy

You really have the market cornered tbh, out of all of all of the car forums I’ve been on for over a decade this is by far relatively the most busy to what it was in the glory days of message boards

Vertical Scope forums died many years ago, but now Vertical Scope really struggling too, I wonder if we can pick F LIfe and the Lambo forums up for a couple dollars soon. :D I think Vertical Scope has over 500 auto forums and I think they have killed most of them. Maybe Maserati Life still OK?

The quality of the forum comes down to the intelligent governance of the forum. Pragmatic and practical application of policing the trolls and spam as Rob said above and also managed content. I’ve learned a lot here. Even understanding that it’s not just some computer on the other end of your communication, it’s actually people.

I have a question, what is killing forums and forum traffic?

@rob lay if the Silver/Gold forums are removed from the metrics, can you share the growth and/or stats related to the core 'Ferrari' content?

It seems like a P&R threads are slowly becoming the majority of the ‘new posts’ page. I would imagine thats keeping the traffic pretty healthy.

At least the trash is cordoned off, and for the most part stays out of the useful and actual car talk.

Silver (and mostly P&R) feels like the lion's share of new posting, and the velocity of posting there eclipses all the other forums. (But it's just a guess on my part)

So there are interesting dymanics. The short answer is the Ferrari areas get more users, P&R and Subscribed get way less users, but much higher involvement.

Sorting by the unique users, the model specific forums rank higher. P&R down in 31st with 909 users and Silver 26th with 969 users. The average user stays engaged in P&R 15 minutes and Silver 8 minutes while model specific forums range 1-3 minutes. Subscribed is a "sticky" place. :D ;)

I think there were two big groups of people on the forums decades ago when I joined and used them (not just Fchat btw). There was a group that mainly used it for the socializing and meetups and then another group that more on the DIY technical aspect and troubleshooting/fixing and modifying their cars and sharing that knowledge to help reach their goals.

The first group probably left mostly to IG or Tiktok since that is more about the social aspect. The forums I use elsewhere and here on Fchat I see a lot of technical, DIY, parts finding, modifying, PPI info, etc content. That's the stuff I always enjoyed and why I'm still here and on other forums. Some of that went onto YouTube as well as it can be easier to show some of those things on video rather than posts.

Vertical Scope bought a Sea Ray forum (Clubsearay.com) last year and they really struggled to move the site to their web platform. Historical posts and images were lost as well as a lot of the DIY topics which are really vital to boat owners. Their search engine and navigation is exponentially worse than Fchat.

It seems that the whole idea behind Vertical Scope was to push ads. The more forums.....the more ads they sold. They have one Canadian Admin assigned to the CSR site which who is responsible for a lot of other sites. As a result.....performance issues and bad behavior go unchecked. As a direct result interactions and postings are down as well as paid memberships.

It just seems Vertical Scope is a forum rollup that sells ads for as long as they can. Their cost profile is somewhat contained since every acquisition is moved on to their software and ad engine.

Based on the interaction between some CSR members and Vertical Scope.......they don't seem to be interested in selling anything they have even if it is not performing.

    Thanks Rob for the honesty.

as someone in another part of media, I have no idea what’s going to happen in 10 years. For me Fchat was about Ferrari owners and enthusiasts exchanging knowledge in a digestible and accessible format.

To take an example I know well, let’s say @tazandjan had created videos instead of responding on Fchat. I would never have watched them for information. And would know a fraction of what I do, about our cars.

Let’s say AI could digest and regurgitate that video content, so I would know for example that post a certain serial number, 575s had a different steering and shock ECU and FHP was less important for those.

I’d have that knowledge in a second, but no knowledge of the community gained through Fchat.

the problem is new generations will just be served the knowledge, and not make the communities. I think I already see it happening here.

I hadn't seen that before, thanks. There is alot there as it meanders around, but some highlights...
    • The Lincoln Forum shunned Facebook and Instagram while we have embraced it and get twice as many views there now as we do the forum.
    • As much as Google has been more favorable valuing "real posts", AI has used our content as their own and try to keep traffic on their platform.
    • Interesting to hear that Vertical Scope has had some success like the VW forum, I don't know the stats, but I think Maserati Life is still OK.
    • Forums are still the best place to exchange information or store information for car enthusiasts, but less people know it anymore.
    • I made one of the best decisions ever that almost no other forum did and I was HATED for it over the years, I didn't allow IMG tagging like with Photobucket. We forced images to be uploaded to our servers and except for one data loss that impacted a few thousand images posted 2001-2003, we have ALL the images posted on FerrariChat and always will. Photobucket turning off free images and linking killed many forums.
