1989 328 wheel bearing question?

So, after doing a bit of searching here, I think I understand that the late 1989 328 front wheel bearing is super expensive and is the same configuration as the 348. My question is if the service procedure? Are they are a sealed bearing or can they be re-greased? I see in the diagrams that it's not an old school repack the inner and outer bearings, but I don't see clarification on what is the service protocol on these later cars? I was planning to add servicing the wheel bearings to my winter projects,,,,,, but wanted to see what recommendations from the experts here on Ferraichat recommend?

 

The bearing is a non serviceable unit and if there were an issue, it would be replaced. It is an assembled unit that is pressed onto the spindle. I would think removal for service would be destructive and have no advantage. Any cleaning of the assembly should be without solvents. Wiping the spindle assembly clean would be my only suggestion. If it has lost all the grease, it would need to be replaced.

 

I serviced the front bearings on my '89 328. Actually quite simple. No need to take the bearing race out. Cleaned hardened old grease out with about 6 cans of brake cleaner. Repacked with Redline grease. Smooth as silk.

 

interesting, two different points of view....... any other advice from those that have or had a 328 with ABS..... what did you do, if anything with the wheel bearings?

 

I did the same. It was over 15 years ago & I can't remember the exact process but I do recall it was a bit of bass-ackwards / counterintuitive wrenching to get the things apart! I've probably done 12-15K miles on them since & no problems.

 

Do a search using the F part number "112799" for many prior threads with pictures -- it's used on many F models (including ABS 328), and many (myself included) have cleaned and regreased them.
