    A quick update

We agreed on placement of the front and rear cameras which you can see below. They wanted to get agreement on this and have them set before disassembly and painting. So they are going to be removed as the rest of the car is taken apart.

Disassembly will begin in earnest this coming week - I will post more photos as they get uploaded to me.

@turbo-joe - I get your point and I included the total price which hopefully for anyone who would be considering a major will be helpful. I didn't want dig into conversations about overpaying for specific parts. For instance the factory part for the oil line between the oil tank and and engine assembly cost nearly $2k - there are Ferrari part websites selling something similar manufactured by a 3rd party for $800.

@lewis you posted the cameras you are using a couple pages back, but can you tell us what you're using for the rest of the camera system?

Are they connecting into a head unit? Personally I'd prefer to have a camera system connect to my dash mounted phone via bluetooth, and leave a traditional looking (no screen) head unit in place for radio (but with bluetooth for phone and as a music source). So would be curious if anyone has ideas on doing that..

@71veedub - I am using a single DIN wireless Apple AirPlay head unit from Power Acoustik (CP-71W; see the link below). I acknowledge that it is no-where near period accurate, however there were a few reasons I went with this unit (1) you can customize the main screen - you can see this in the 430 forum where guys did some pretty cool things to make it look kind-of OEM (2) it is hidden by the flip door so it doesn’t stand out (3) I researched various alternative and this was, for me, the least hassle way to accomplish front and rear cameras and have Apple CarPlay.

Both cameras are connected directly to the head unit; the rear camera is triggered by the reverse tail lights and the front camera is triggered by a push button on the head unit.

I am not using Power Acoustic for the speakers or the amp as they get very poor reviews. I am still trying to find the best speaker system sound - quality is important, but most important is a speaker system that has a tweeter that best fits the existing setup. I have searched all over the TR forum and there are only a few posts that specifically address tweeters (make and model) that fit. The woofer is clearly a standard 6.5 inch unit - i am not 100% sure on a tweeter size that fits. Also there are conflicting posts on the difficultly of removing / replacing the tweeter. It appears the US version Testarossa is the most difficult followed by the US version of the 512TR because of the knee protection. Some folks say they can reach up behind the dash and remove them, some folks say they can just twist and unscrew them and others have had to remove the dash - so this is still something i am researching. It appears from the manuals that all Testarossa and TR original tweeters were square and had four screws behind the dash holding them in place.

There a lot of posts in the 430 section of Ferrarchat and in a separate Lotus forum talking about the Power Acoustik CP-71W - lots of folks using this head unit with good reviews.

Thank you @lewis for all those details.. not sure it's exactly what I'm looking for but it may work. I'd really prefer a traditional head unit with buttons and a volume knob; looking period correct is immaterial to me, I just prefer the tactile feedback and more subdued look. I need to see if there's any way to connect a camera to a phone. Wasn't impressed with Android auto on our one new car so we just use bluetooth phone/music.

Hmm my TR still has the original period Alpine head unit; I keep debating switching it with one of my spare BE6112 headunits vs a custom Porsche classic radio. The latter will require mild customization to get rid of the Porsche iconography and if it’s not possible, I could always just repurpose it for another car and default to the BE6112. I also may be putting too much thought into something that I have never turned on once in the six years I’ve owned the car.

Lewis, sometimes there are viable alternatives. By knowing the real costs being experienced out there as Romano (turbo-joe) is suggesting, it may stimulate better conversations to identify such alternatives. As a result, here is mine. If your $2K factory large oil hose from the dry sump oil tank is the same as CH46 on my 1986 Testarossa, the end fittings are easy to disassemble and allow for a simple hose replacement. The following pics show my disassembly and reassembly of same. The new hose was obtained from Summit Racing which was Aeroquip -20AN 1-1/8" ID and 1.410" OD. As I needed a little over two feet, I purchased three feet for $118. Easy stuff, but IIRC, one of those threads is a reverse thread to be aware of. Now my documenting this may help others. EDoug

@EDoug - Love the theme and you have a good point - i will edit and post this weekend the part costs. The oil "hose" they replaced was a fixed-bended metal pipe, not a flexible hose - i will try to find that part number and photo as well.

Separately, the disassembly process began in earnest. I probably spend too much time looking at the disassembly photos because the things behind the exterior i find fascinating. The guys at CCU have uploaded dozens of photos, below is only a small handful of what they have shared.

I found the invoice from the "respray" that was done in 2019 which cost $9,750 pounds. I can tell you the leather on my car isn't great and needs significant work to make it look as good as @jkg2101 seats. I get the reconditioning of the leather interior on this invoice was 6 years ago, but for $6K I would have hoped it would have been in better condition - the car could have been mistreated / left outside since 2019 which would have damaged the leather, but the dash is in near perfect condition so i would have expected dash warping had there been material mistreatment.

I am now debating having a 3rd party install the new head unit / speakers / amp - it would be much easier with the car disassembled. I had initially intended to reserve this project as a DYI.
