How would that help? Can F1 be watched live on the internet? I don't have Apple TV. In fact I don't subscribe to any streaming, I hate the idea and have enough to watch on my Tivo box anyhow. Nor do I have a smart TV. As for Apple and F1: This is really sad and one can argue either way whether that is helpful or detrimental to the sport in the US. Now I miss good old Europe where every country broadcasts its own F1 feed. Monopolies suck, yet here we are in the heart of capitalism stuck with one.
TiVo? I think you have more bad news coming, according to what I read in The Wall Street Journal this week.
Nah. It's not a Tivo box that actually records shows (they're gone years ago). My Tivo box today is the router from my cable provider. It doesn't store anything locally, it's just the brain/interface to the cable provider since my TV is "dumb". And yes, that was a downgrade too: I was able to store my favorite shows indefinitely on the hard disk of my original Tivo box. I was even able to copy it down from there. Not anymore. These small boxes don't allow for that and the shows get deleted after 3 months.
Back to F1 in the US: My cable provider also has some channels in Spanish. Univision I believe. They carry the races in spanish, probably a feed from Mexico. I wonder whether they get eliminated by this deal as well or not?
I don't have an Apple phone. Getting streaming to my Roku TV would require extending the internet from my home office to the living room. (They're too far apart for high speed wifi.) (And I'm not sure my TV is compatible with all the security provisions I put on my wifi.) Dish network has also moved several channels from the satellites to streaming. (Apparently, the Dish "Hopper" requires a network connection.) (My ancient ViP612 is past its "use by" date.) My house is already pre-wired for coax. If I were building new, I'd have it pre-wired for coax, cat 6, and fiber. But I'll have to see just how expensive it'd be to add cat 6 drops in several rooms. (Been thinking of doing that for a while. Might be time.)
Man that's peanuts. You can't even get Hamilton to drive two seasons for that. Lol. My initial reaction is that this is very short sighted from Liberty. Sooooo many people in the US have espn. Apple TV? Not so much. $13 isn't much really. You can't even get a decent burger, fries, and a coke for that now. That being said, if Ferrari is competitive I will pay it. If they suck, I will just save the money and work on cars instead.
I wired my house for cat-5 in about 1997 - at least four rj45s drops to every room with big patch panel in basement. Then UNwired my house a couple years ago - pulled all the wire out and patched the drywall holes. WiFi is awesome these days - I’m seeing bandwidth of about 700Mb to my devices and you only need about 25kb to stream 4k video, so don’t waste time pulling wire. Kevin PS - my internet connection is AT&T fiber at 5Gb
Depends on your house's layout and materials. My 5Ghz wifi doesn't reliably reach the LR from the office where the Ethernet sits. My phone can't see the 5Ghz wifi at all outside. (House is made of brick, presumably with foil waterproof flashing.) TCL configures their Roku TVs for wifi --- --- except the 4K TVs which get an Ethernet jack. Besides, for (paranoid) security purposes, I can only connect wifi devices that let you manually set network parameters. (No DHCP.) (There's a school nearby, and pretty much every kid has a phone these days.) When I lived in MA, there were times when my garage door opener wouldn't work with the remote next to the opener antenna -- because all the radio noise from the nearby DEC plant saturated the receiver front end. Wire will always be more reliable than radio. Although a compromise might be to run an Ethernet feed to the other side of the house for a second Wifi router. Besides: Apple TV would require downloading an "app" to my TV. For HDMI, an Apple TV box would need an internet connection, typically Ethernet.
Now I see. I have my Apple TV connected to my tv with HDMI and it’s connected to WiFi. My TV is too old for 4k even though Apple TV has the capability.
Sounds like I might be able to continue using F1tv app until my subscription expires in September 2026.
Did you also remove the coax connections, as streaming doesn't need it? I'm old enough to remember cable companies drilling big messy holes in your hardwood floors on sloppy installs. I use the pre-wired coax to run my DBS dish to the satellite receivers. (Although they had to upgrade the connectors.) Ever think of converting the Ethernet to USB-C? (E.g. charging ports. ) Once the wires are run, changing connectors is easy. --- (Yes, yes, I know: they have wireless keyboards and cordless phone chargers. )
Liberty only cares what they get paid, not how many viewers they get. Apple only cares if they get more subscribers; they don't care if viewership drops. But Liberty might notice if attendance to US races drops when people are no longer following the series. I fear F1 is going to go the way of WRC: drops US coverage, gets subjected to EU regulations, and just kinda peters out. I wonder if McLaren will rename their road cars "Arrows".
I also don't have ANYTHING Apple. WiFi is not good enough all around my house, even with WiFi and extender. But i only have 1Gb cable internet. ( only comes through at 450Mb) Switching to 2Gb fiber this week. Fortunately I wired my whole house with ethernet when built in 2007. I don't watch the races or qualifying live. I'm still hopeful that whatever F1Access is will allow me to watch replays.
I pay $13/mo year round for seven months of NHL. that’s the only reason I have ESPN+ I guess I’m about to do the same with Apple TV. at least the F1 season is 10 months long now
I work in IT, have been watching F1 since the 60’s when I lived in England. Many, many years of F1 coverage challenges. I hate both subscriptions and the cloud - both money grabs as far as I’m concerned . However subscriptions do allow for cancellation - I signed up for Ted Lasso, binge watched and cancelled. I’m not going to over-react, and will consider all options. I honestly don’t find current F1 as appealing as it used to be. $13/month isn’t much for the access provided but you know the price will only go up! On the topic of WiFi, my brick home is pre-wired cat6. I use 2 outlets, but otherwise run a mesh which gives me full WiFi coverage- also in back garden
I think my brick house has foil weather flashing, based on what came out of the hole when the telco drilled in to run fiber. Also, a lot of metal HVAC ducts run around the place. And most residential properties are fairly narrow, as 2x4 framing can only span about 24 feet. But my place is three adjoined segments with nearly a rectangular overall footprint. So it has interior load-bearing walls.
