A few years ago, I walked in on a coffee station conversation among a bunch of female new hires, all just out of college (engineering). One woman was being complemented profusely on her fancy new sweater. It sounded like all the others wanted to get one too. The sweater owner said, with great pride, that she bought it used at a thrift store, meaning that it was one of a kind. The envy continued.

I walked away with a feeling that times had certainly changed.

I have a few more dollars into it, I bought some suede elbow patches for $7 and my tailor is charging $20 to sew them on, almost doubling my cost!

Sounds like a scaled down example of used Maserati ownership.

I bought quite a few things, back in the days of when we had literally
8-10 thrift stores all along a 1/4 mile stretch of road in what was then a
    run-down part of town.
Now that particular part of town has grown gangbusters, and rent for storefront
has gone up about 10x what it was back then, when the building owners would
have taken almost nothing just to rent space out.

    (Julia - I speak of Maple Street from 57th to about 62nd, early-mid 90's)

    Any, I digress....

Back then I bought a Vitamix - a GOOD one - for $15, and sold it for $400.

I found an ice hockey goaltender's mask for $5, and sold it for over $300 and
wish I would have kept it, it was one of the original 'Jacques Plante' fibreglass
ones when they started coming out in the early 70's.
Worth an easy $1,000 today, if not more.

A couple of real, original hickory golf clubs for $2 each, were worth about $75
    back then.

Even collector books are scarce - first edition FIRST PRINTING of certain
    authors are worth a ton.

Some punk rock albums from the late 70's - ones where they only made 300-500 pressings....

The PROBLEM with thrift stores today is the internet.
Everyone - including shop owners - usually know what stuff is worth now before
they ever put it on the shelves, in fact, a lot of them DON'T put it on the shelves -
they go directly to EBay with it.
Things like cast iron cooking items, certain video games, golf clubs....

    I was joking with you....
I donated two Palm Beach navy blue blazers about 2 years ago, I'll never wear them.

I DO have a brown herringbone sport jacket WITH dark brown elbow patches I'll never wear,
    I think it's a 44 Long, if interested....
