so randomly sometimes the black cloth part of the roof will close normally and sometimes it just won't move at all from a completely folded down position. the red body panel always moves correctly but the black cloth frame sometimes does nothing. with the closing switch constantly engaged it doesn't even attempt to rise up just sits there i don't see anything cycling or moving or any irregular noises besides the normal sounds.

i will try this 3 times with no success, drive the car with top down 20min and try again and it works normally and closes.

any ideas on this random issue?

You mean you can still hear the pump motor running?

Since it is intermittent in nature, it's more likely to be an electrical issue.... Probably one of the many position sensing microswitches is in the wrong position or there is an intermittent hydraulic solenoid valve issue. The best way to diagnose this is with an OBD2 scanner capable of talking to your Roof ECU.

The logic for canvas lifting is:

    Solenoid valve close softtop M.VZ = 1
    Limit switch softtop closed E.V/Z = 1
    Limit switch softtop open E.V/A = 0
Solenoid valve open front top frame M.SDA = 1
    Solenoid valve close lock M.VVZ = 1

A scanner will show the status of the highlighted values.

e.g. EV/Z may be faulty (showing the roof already up).

yes i can hear the motor whining but it's steady and constant and nothing moves. when the roof mechanism does work the motor will make noises associated with more force applied to flip certain parts around which sounds normal. i will have a tech look at it tomorrow and update.
