so randomly sometimes the black cloth part of the roof will close normally and sometimes it just won't move at all from a completely folded down position. the red body panel always moves correctly but the black cloth frame sometimes does nothing. with the closing switch constantly engaged it doesn't even attempt to rise up just sits there i don't see anything cycling or moving or any irregular noises besides the normal sounds.

i will try this 3 times with no success, drive the car with top down 20min and try again and it works normally and closes.

any ideas on this random issue?

You mean you can still hear the pump motor running?

Since it is intermittent in nature, it's more likely to be an electrical issue.... Probably one of the many position sensing microswitches is in the wrong position or there is an intermittent hydraulic solenoid valve issue. The best way to diagnose this is with an OBD2 scanner capable of talking to your Roof ECU.

The logic for canvas lifting is:

    Solenoid valve close softtop M.VZ = 1
    Limit switch softtop closed E.V/Z = 1
    Limit switch softtop open E.V/A = 0
Solenoid valve open front top frame M.SDA = 1
    Solenoid valve close lock M.VVZ = 1

A scanner will show the status of the highlighted values.

e.g. EV/Z may be faulty (showing the roof already up).

yes i can hear the motor whining but it's steady and constant and nothing moves. when the roof mechanism does work the motor will make noises associated with more force applied to flip certain parts around which sounds normal. i will have a tech look at it tomorrow and update.

tech said the operation seemed fine it did not throw any error codes. he said it was better to leave the top up instead of down for long periods of sitting.
in my case i had the top down for over a month and his theory is that first switch got out of alignment and wouldn't trigger and that driving it around probably jarred it back into position. he also said to shut off and restart to completely reset the roof cycle electronics and to only run roof with engine on for full power.
fluids looked fine and no leaks.

he said run the roof as often as you like but i know i've read that the more usage will eventually wear out the parts so i'm going to settle on happy medium of once a week running the roof full cycle open and closed.

Do you happen to know the part numbers for those two microswitches?

    Thanks,

    Scott

Items 4 and 8 in this parts catalogue:

    https://www.eurospares.co.uk/Ferrari/430/F430_Spider_(USA)/PartDiagrams/0118/ROOF_MICROSWITCHES_AND_ECU?ref=004

I don't know the manufacturer part number, but if you can see it on the switches, it might be easier to splice/solder a new switch in than accessing the connectors for the microswitches.

That is after doing a proper diagnosis, of course. Roof issues can be caused by a multitude of things.
