Not sure if serious? P2 in Indycar for McLaren this year. Great raw pace; not the best at managing the race. Took a big step this year though on the latter. Lives in Monterrey MEH HEE COH. Very popular driver in US and Mexico. Nice guy; aggressive and entertaining driver.
Yeah, but, but, but.....he doesn't know the tracks on the calender. I mean, he would be a rookie but I just don't know how's he going to perform on any F1 track.
Learning F1 tracks is easy compared to US tracks for these guys. Huge runoffs and very little consequences. I would say the car and tire will be much more difficult. With Mexico, I'm sure he has hundreds or thousands of laps on this circuit. Also has racing experience in Europe in f2 and f4 I believe. Also drove super formula.
I think that is prudent. To be 100% honest, I would expect him to struggle in F1 as a full time driver right now - especially with the limited seat time available in the cars. The driving style is so much different than in Indycar. The cars are much more technical, the tires are totally different, etc. etc. But I think he may be super quick at this track and would assume he got a ton of sim time leading up to it since the Indycar season has been over for a long time now. Zak is also a big Pato fan, so I'm sure he wants him to do well. Not sure if Zak has something in mind for him specifically or if it might be a way to put pressure or gain leverage in negotiations with the current drivers down the road. If I were a driver at McLaren, I would not want him in my car. He's quick, but he might crash it because he has something to prove and is also very confident and aggressive. Ok, hoping to watch practice soon - tied up with work. Ugh!
Agree with the assessment. Regarding the path to McLaren, if Piastri's contract extension goes south, probably with a not favourable Championship outcome at the end of the year, one can think Zak may tap into Pato's career path to fill the second seat. As you said, he's aggressive and fast. He won't care about Norris position in the team, maybe a bit, if he wins the Championship, but he will try to earn a level playing field. I'd give him one year to adjust to F1 and then do a lot better.
Oscar Piastri’s “multi-year” extension will reportedly last at least until the end of the 2028 season.
