Hi, Walter... Yes, it's here in SoCal and has had resto' work done. Not sure if 100% completed as I have yet to see it running.
Owner is local collector. I'm reluctant to just state the name without permission, so will advise him of your interest.

    Whatever actually became of Joe?

No idea what became of Joe. I was in contact with him around 2005-7. He sent me everything he had collected (photos, letters etc.) about Maserati. Cars he had owned and from others.

very late comment, what about this targa for sale in France in October 1989
Auction catalogue comment : " Transformed into a spider by Steering Wheel Inc. Maserati distributor in Florida"
Chassis number noted : 2096, which is probably wrong as that one is abandoned in New Hampshire and was for sale in 2021 with a proper roof ( or is it the same car ?)
    Any clues someone ?

Interesting. No idea about the VIN of that car in the photo. Wozld be great to find out how many of the Merak had been converted to Targa specification. But all these must be done in the USA as I know of any Merak that had been chopped in EU.
