That sux Peter and sorry to hear.....at least the fix will be during months that typically wouldn't get a lot of miles....congrats on driving it 25K miles!

 

Great post. BTW, when a PTU does fail, how will you know? Can you just limp it to a repair shop will it cause damage to drive it.

Right -- once again, there are multiple threads on PTU failure that take hours to cover here on this board, and I've gleefully spent too many hours researching, following YouTube tutorials, and THEN, four years into my ownership, my PTU failed - yet it's Factory Covered under the Power15 Warranty (read all the threads)

I've found that the short-cut/easiest way to get up-to-speed it to watch Hollywood Mechanic's YouTube Videos.

Next best is to visit the Parke's UK website for a corroboration. Very well written and illustrated. Same as Hollywood (Hugely helpful)

I'm booked for flatbed on Wednesday and I've shared all of this with my Dealer reps already -- told them that this factory-fix will fail again, and when I bring it to them the NEXT time, after the next (imminent) fail, that we are going to replace it with the retrofit (upgraded) parts, as shown perfectly by Hollywood Mechanic and Parke's retrofit kit with stronger materials paired with factory design.

Thanks to all their hard work, let us continue to address these little, gigantic, enormous problems together as the FF family we are.

Peter, thanks so much for posting your experience and keeping us updated. My 2015 FF has 28K miles and so far so good.

However, I am really interested in the dealer's response when you told him next time you expect them to rebuild the PTU with a thrid party's parts. I've had experiences with dealers, Ferrari and others, where they will not use anything other than genuine manufacturer parts. In 2022, I drove my 612 to the FCA Annual in Mont Tremblant. Well I almost drove there. At the Canadian border an oil line to my gearbox burst. The car went to Ferrari of Montreal and they had the car there for a month trying to locate an oil line. I told them repeatedly just have one fabricated at a local shop. They absolutely refused. I had the car transported back to Mass. to my local independent and 3 days later he had the line made and installed. Of course the funny part was he told me the fabricated line was better quality than the Ferrari one it replaced (sound familiar ).

I can't believe that a Ferrari dealer would even consider using Hollywood Mechanic's parts. Not to mention since no Ferrari dealer has ever rebuilt a PTU, they wouldn't have a clue as to how to do it. If they tell you they will rebuild it with third party parts, I'd get that in writing and notarized!

I've been a Miller Motorcars (Factory) client for about 14 years, a fairly good sized shareholder since 2017 (that probably won't matter), and have enjoyed time with many of the Dealer Sponsored Events, so I am relying heavily on my Dealership Relationship.

I have been maintaining this FF with them as per factory specifications for the past 4+ years including annual preventative maintenance (again, if you know the PTU Failure Thread history, I'm all over this)

Lastly, when I reached out to my Rep, we are pre-agreed that for me to ask for parts from Parke's or from Hollywood Mechanic, that it's not happening YET

So to address your question, we framed the discussion as hey -- let's let the Factory do its work as warrantied -- and when it breaks again, we'll retrofit the improved versions outside of the shop with our pre-agreed outside guys who are no longer with the Dealership, who know this like Parke's or GTE or Hollywood -- so we're going Factory 100% of the way on this thread for the time being / live updates to come. It's getting trucked to Miller Motorcars on Wednesday morning.

That's the bridge when the Factory takes over for now & I'll keep you posted on this thread only.

Did you confirm that the PTU is actually the problem? It's not unusual to get some weird errors with these cars here and there... I've had various ones come up and the best I've ever had from the dealer is a shrug and a "we can't find anything wrong"... the software in these cars is unreliable at best.
