    I continue to be a little surprised (although it’s well documented) that there is not a huge correlation between the VIN# and other various numbers for the 512TRs.

    For instance, below is my 1993 512 TR vs. another 1993 that is currently up for auction

    My Vin: ZFFLA40S000096238
    Other Vin: ZFFLA40B0000946667

    My Housing #: 152681
    Other Housing# 146785

    My Trans#: 1457
    Other Trans# 2018

    My Air Filter Color: Black
    Other Air Filter Color: Grey

    I do have a later engine # 33523 which has the stronger quill shaft - I could not find the engine number on the other 512TR up for auction.

    What is interesting is despite my VIN and Housing number being quite a bit later, the other 1993 had a trans# that is quite a bit later and likely includes that dowel-pinned ring gear. I could not find the engine number on this auction site.

    Just another example of the importance of needing to look at all stamped data.

    What would be more illustrative than a VIN is the assembly # and production dates. We know cars are not built in order of VIN particularly when we are comparing cars of different versions. In this case a base European model (B) vs a Swiss or Swedish version (S). That by itself may explain many discrepancies.
    The transmission numbers make me question if one had a transaxle change.

    And what do you mean housing number? What housing?
