Moving the topic from travel (here). Several guys have talked about doing some sort of cross country drive and one of the things mentioned in that other thread was the 100th anniversary of Rte 66 coming up in 2026. I will be showing a couple of cars at Monterey car week next year and I’d like to do a cross country drive back with one of them. Of course I’ve talked to a few friends about what/where/when and it’s evolving into “maybe we should do a planned rally”. Posting here to gauge interest. The idea would be:

    - Travel historic Rte 66 beginning in Santa Monica CA and ending in Chicago IL.

    - Organized hotel stops along the route that accommodate our cars safely and are higher end whenever possible.

    - Organized lunch stops and dinners.

    - Planned experiences and photo ops along the way including a track day if possible. Also look to visit any Ferrari dealerships near the route.

    - Cut trip into segments to allow people to opt into shorter pieces of the drive as desired.

    - Private road side support for our group.

    - Cost TBD but the idea is segments or the entire trip can be “bought” and the cost would either be collected or paid by each car - not sure which is better. Also considering a charity raise as a component of the trip.

    - Considering doing this last half of September for cooler weather plus school back in should result in less traffic etc along the way.

    - Prefer to keep it Ferrari only and fairly limited number of cars.

So, is anyone interested in doing this part/whole? Any suggestions or ideas on other things to make it a cool experience?

Well, as for an “idea”, I was under the impression Route 66 is historically and technically starting in Chicago and ending in Santa Monica, hence should be driven/traveled from east to west ?

Also, you might want to research the actual routing, etc of it.
My best friend & his wife drove east-to-west following it several years ago, using a +/-20 year old guide booklet about it and various attractions & sites along it, but according to their discoveries, almost half of the attractions/sites no longer existed, not to mention large sections of the original road no longer exist or some that do, are if not impossible, at least difficult to access for any reasonable sense of coherence.
IIRC, they spent 7 or 10 days and she took +/-10K photos between start & finish.

Might be one of those romantic ideas that often sound better on keyboard or paper than in practice.

Thankfully Rte 66 isn’t a one way road and it looks very much the same regardless of the direction traveled. Perhaps it’s romantic but it’s also a compelling reason to get out and drive which to me is the entire reason to own these cars. It’s well traveled with plenty of food, hotels, and gas options along the way. There’s also a handful of Ferrari dealers along the way to check out and a few race tracks too.

Ultimately I’m indifferent if the drive is a southern route like this one or a northern route. Either way I’d like to get some guys together and do this next fall and remain open to constructive discussion…

I will be doing some of Route 66 in May 2026. Starting in Carlsbad and heading east to about Oklahoma. I'll be driving my little Boxster to an event in the Smoky Mountains. Should be fun.
