The London to Brighton Veteran Car run is the world's oldest existing motoring event. This Sunday some 400 horseless carriages will set off from central London to tackle the 60 mile route to the coastal town of Brighton. Not all of them will make it!

As last year, and as a prelude to the run, there was a "Motoring Spectacle" featuring many of this year's Veteran Run participants as well as more recent vehicles displayed along Pall Mall. In addition, RM Sotheby's were conducting an auction in the Peninsula Hotel, a short distance away, near Hyde Park.

Apologies in advance that some of the pictures posted here will not be of Ferraris and some of the Ferraris will not be vintage.

For anyone not sure if they had found the right place, RM Sotheby's had helpfully parked a couple of clues in the street outside.

In the hotel courtyard some of the auction lots were on display. Or possibly just vehicles belonging to the average guest at the Peninsula?

This 599 GTB Fiorano was delivered new to Hong Kong and bears a plaque identifying it as the last manual 599 built (although the numbers built RM give in the auction catalogue are not correct).

The screen behind is showing a 250 SWB that RM have for sale by Private Treaty which is rather sad for me because it is a stunning example that has belonged to a friend of mine for some years and, a few years ago, I had a hugely memorable passenger ride in it.

From the Peninsula hotel, past Hyde Park corner. At the entrance to Constitution Hill stand the Memorial Gates that were erected in 2002 and commemorate those from India, Africa and the Carribean who volunteered to fight with the British is the two World Wars.

On the left is Green Park and on the right is the wall that surrounds the gardens of Buckingham Palace.

I'm not sure why it is called Constitution Hill because it isn't hilly.

The Palace. The King's standard isn't flying, just the Union flag, so he wasn't home.

Competition cars on display included Le Mans Audi, Lancia Delta Integrale and two F1 cars. The latter pair commemorating 75 years of the Formula 1 World Championship. Also on display was the original trophy that is presented to the winner of the British Grand Prix who only gets to walk away with a replica.
