Porsche just had a $1.1 billion loss for the third quarter.

 

No point to single out Porsche: all the German carmakers are losing money at the moment thanks to narrow minded government policies forcing them to swallow the cost of transitions to EVs.
The price of energy has tripled since the termination of nuclear power added to the end of cheap Russian gas supply, increasing the cost of fabrication.
As a consequence of these factors, the German auto industry is bleeding heavily, with mass redundenciess, factory closures, and loss of market in the US and Asia.
France and Italy aren't doing much better. In the UK, our car sector is practically moribund.
I don't think the US car industry is particularly healthy; even some Japanes carmakers are at risk.
The winner is China.

 

No shock and its luxury industry wide not just autos. Tariffs are not helping many sectors as well. Will F1 itself start to see falling numbers etc. Who knows eh?

The broader luxury sector is feeling a similar strain as global economic conditions shift amid geopolitical tensions, rising job losses linked to A.I., and growing backlash against conspicuous consumption.

Bain & Company recently predicted a “normalization” of the luxury market, writing: “The global luxury sector this year confronts its most far-reaching disruptions—and its biggest potential setbacks for at least 15 years—amid mounting economic turbulence and complex social and cultural shifts.”

Major luxury groups like LVMH have seen revenues tumble this year, while Interbrand’s Best Global Brands 2025 report found that the combined value of 13 personal luxury brands fell by 5 percent. On that list, Porsche’s brand value dropped 14 percent year over year.

Even though Porsche isn’t alone in its decline, the message is clear: even the most exclusive brands are not immune to shifting consumer behavior and tightening economic conditions. The question now is whether the power of a name—and the allure of luxury—can endure as the market for aspirational excess runs out of road.

 

I'm aware. I just showed it as a point of reference to John's post above that Porsche isn't as infallible as many believe compared to Ferrari.

IMO they are are on shaky ground right now with some troubled waters to navigate on the immediate horizon.

 

Take off your kartoffel tinted glasses, Porsche has been on the brink of bankrupcy a few times. They had to sell engineering services and even got military contracts from the government to stay afloat. The last time they finally got engulfed by Volkswagen.

Now everybody blames the EU politics but their plan was reckless: they killed all their cash cows at once without setting a plan B. It was the only European manufacturer that was so stupid. Ferrari got the message and already has delayed their second electric model.

 

Not that I agree with the valuation, but ALL of VW is worth 52billion USD. Ferrari is worth 72billion USD.

New Ferraris also come with a longer service/warranty than Porsche - 7 vs 4 years.

I think labelling Ferraris as simply pretty vs Porsche being "great" is a little overboard.

My buddy bought a new Porsche 911. He starts driving it and the floor is wet. So weird. He takes it in for service and they find that the drain for the evaporator was never installed...at the factory. I mean, that is pretty bananas. Sure just one case, but I've honestly never heard of something like that.

Porsches also have their own history of issues as well. None of these companies are perfect.

Although if you want something super reliable, one can always get a Toyota...who also has an insane racing history ; )

My daily drivers are BMWs, and they have become such crap that I may end up in a Toyota SUV....at least until I regain my sanity.

Further info says that rumor is not true. Thats as valid as Horner being hired.

 

An aging driver that is not performing, that doesn't have any historic connection to the team, not getting his contract renewed when it expires, I do not constitute as a crazy thing to happen.

 

Whats mote worrying is rumours of sticking with this years suspension concept for the 26 car as this years rear suspensuon has been such a success.

Contract - we know what we read. Supposedly he has an option on his side for 2027 - he decides to use it or not. Certainly the team can send him off. We will know when we see that happen. Its F1 nothing is crazy. The much bigger story is the waste of time Charles has going on at Ferrari. By race 5 or so if they are not competitive they wont be talking about LH leaving but Charles.

 

Well, McLaren made it work, so the problem is not in the concept.

I think that Hamilton could be a last resort (desperate) solution for Mercedes. Their first option is Verstappen, and if that fails they´ll have to keep Russell. Hamilton would be needed if Antonelli didn´t deliver and they couldn´t find a suitable replacement. It´s easy to make the comparison with Raikkonen´s second stint at Ferrari.

 

They will give Kimi more time I think. I dont see LH ever going back to Mercedes. If he is out after next year, I think he leaves the sport. The wisdom is it doesnt matter who Max team-mate is overall. Bottas is around and knows the team rather well. A balance with Max and Toto is happy with Bottas.

The new rules will demand different skills from the drivers. We might be surprised who is more technically adept to the new machines.

 

Antonelli needs improvement, he won´t survive another season like this. Only as a docile team mate to Verstappen, in case they didn´t want to take the risk with a Verstappen-Russell pairing.

BTW, I suspect Piastri will be in the market soon too.

There has been virtually NO discussion of this. The driving style required seems counterintuitive to me. It will be interesting to see who(if any) of the current stars can adapt to these cars and prevail?

 

In fact, Kimi Antonelli isn't doing too bad for his 1st year in F1. He is still learning his trade.
So far, out of 20 GPs, he finished 11 times in the points and had one podium.
Mercedes took a risk promoting a young driver into their top team.
They must be playing the long game, I guess.

 

It's unfair to berate LH's first year a Ferrari, he just hasnt had the machinery to come up with the goods. Most likely past his prime and definately paid way to much but for me he brings some order to a chaotic team. Love him or hate him it has got better and his demands hold some value and authority. You can argue with someone who hasnt won a WDC, but a 7 times WDC is a different matter.

Should we be worried abobut the new radical engine for 2026.

 

Every time I sit in my scud I think of Kimi - there is a plaque to his accomplishment in it...or maybe it's a tombstone....

I was starting to get excited about his performance as his pace got closer to Charles, but the last two race results have left me disappointed. Aside from that, his performance has been more or less what I expected relative to Charles - fairly distant at first, and then closer as the season went on.

That being said, as you point out, he is old for an F1 driver...time catches up with all of us.

Hard to tell what his impact has been on the team, but I think what you say is plausible.

If what i hear is correct the 2026 engine isnt going to well and recent additions in the engine dept have been scathing about the direction they are taking. The loss of critical engineers to Audi and Cadillac are not going to help steady the ship.

Driver performance may be the least of their problems.
