Lando had 2 races he did not finish.
He crashed in Montreal (his fault)
His PU died in another race- (not his fault)

If he would have just finished those races in the top 5- it wouldnt even be as close as it is. People love to hate on Lando but he is the better driver over Oscar.

All the talk of preference…even sabotage…has probably got into his head. Or maybe he’s the one with the superior car at the beginning of the season. Plus, people don’t seem to recognize that Norris’s form has improved. It isn’t all down to the cars.

Yes the team is babying Lando, but that shouldn't shake Piastri; yet it does. He is fragile and flying off the track twice without anybody touching him is truly poor form.

Seasoned championship contenders recognize you have to put together a whole season. Not just a portions of it.

Another boring sprint race...Hamilton made a nice start; Charles did what he could.

Most exciting part was Bortoletto turning his car into a canoe.

Really? Can you give me some examples?

He made an amateur mistake there, and has been making them repeatedly recently.

Early in the season Lando couldn't get on with the car and Mclaren developed a different front suspension for him to get better feel. Piastri stuck with the old one. It's not too far fetched a theory that the last set of upgrades works better with this suspension than the old one. That said, the new suspension has been available to Piastri as well and if he doesn't use it because he either doesn't like it or doesn't want to...it's a limitation on his own part.

I think it's also just as likely that Piastri looked at some reasonably questionable directives from Mclaren over the whole season (dictating when Piastri is allowed to attack or not, giving up positions), and Singapore being the final straw and he's lost confidence in the team supporting him. But that's on Piastri being unable to deal with it.

The decisions Mclaren have made that seemingly all favoured Lando I find questionable to say the least. Zak Brown being CEO and Director of Norris' company is surely a conflict of interest (he resigned in July after the company got sold), Norris' dad being a heavy investor in Mclaren and the partnership that Mclaren has with Norris' dads company. I do believe that Mclaren prefers Norris to be champion (despite their claim that they don't prefer either driver or indeed apparently even care if they win the drivers title, which is pure nonsense of course), but Piastri has done so much damage himself in the last few races, the need for any theory doesn't even need to be discussed anymore.

Webber for all his talk about Multi 21 and preventing similar scenarios clearly didn't manage that part well either, if you ask me.

I won't deny that Piastri made a "faux pas" during the Sprint at Interlagos.

An amateur mistake that can be compared to Norris' stupid overtaking attempt in Canada.

It's a fact that even the best drivers make errors from time to time.

Appreciate the info as always! Ah the politics of racing.

I see what you're saying of course. However, I would say that this is all part of the game unfortunately.

While I'm sure none of this is ideal for Piastri, champions must all deal with similar issues. Even if a team desires to give a sincerely equal opportunity to both drivers, it's incredible hard to achieve. It is often also not in the best interest of the team.

I think the best counter argument as well would be that - the new suspension was needed, Lando was right, and the team was right to listen to him and develop it. I say this because Piastri's pace has not just fallen off vs Lando, but vs the rest of the field as well.

Is Piastri better? Is Lando better? Obviously, it is hard to say definitively right now. What we do know is that Lando has more F1 seat time in cars which work and those that don't work so well. Assuming they are close in ability, there is virtually no way to overcome that disadvantage in my experience.

Finally, why doesn't the mainstream F1 media talk about any of this? I read about and watch a decent amount of F1, and a lot of this is news to me.

Oh for sure. But I think the frequency at which he has made them since the break has exploded. He went from being the best driver on the grid to probably 4-5th best now IMO. Lando, Charles, and Max are all clearly getting more out of their cars.

That is why I don't think he deserves to be champion and why he won't catch Lando at this point. But, it could still happen, which is why this is a great sport even if it doesn't meet all of our desires.

Honestly, I hope he digs deep and makes it a fight. But with what Bas just explained regarding the car, that sounds pretty unrealistic.

    You nailed it.

While Zak is an ass and the team is cruel to Oscar, ultimately he is in charge and he is making rookie mistakes. The guy has talent but no longer the nerves. And it's not just the mistakes, he also is slow compared to Lando. I expected much more and it is not coming. Lando WDC, oh well. Bring on 2026.

Yeah...Lando really has his mojo going, while the RB racecar is such a POS even Max's talent isn't enough but I sure hope he can win. I like watching talent! Piastri just imploded. Remember when Perez was on a good roll with RB then it all fell apart? That's what I think of with piastri.

Yeah, I saw Piastri as WDC and definitely WDC material but I'm no longer convinced. And he might have just blown his one and only chance in a lifetime to get there. Who knows where the McLarens will be next year.

For the time being Alan Jones remains the last WDC from down under.

It’s easy if anybody’s willing to se it: Norris has improved through the season and Piastri has not. If Piastri feels he’s not been treated fairly in the team then it’s up to him to have the mental toughness to deal with that. That’s what champions do.

As to the alleged favoritism, I don’t know what’s in their contracts and I don’t think anybody outside the team and their management does. And as to the personalities involved, I think Piastri is probably a fine guy you’d like to have as a friend, and I hope he becomes WDC someday, and I think Norris is a bit of a ponce but I don’t understand the hate that some have for him. If he has any advantage due to business relationships, well that’s the way it is now. F1 is more a business than a sport as far as team ownerships are concerned so certain decisions are going to prioritize business considerations over sportsmanship. Presumably Piastri knew and accepted the relationships between Norris’s business and father, and the McLaren organization when he came into the team.

But the most important factor is: who is delivering results and who isn’t. F1 is the avatar of “What have you done for me lately?”
