This is not an issue with my car - it concerns a friend's car in NJ.

It's a 2003 360 coupe, dealer serviced. One day he was driving and he heard a loud POP with tons of white smoke coming from the engine bay. When inspected, the intake tubes both popped off the manifold.

It's hard to diagnose from afar, but after learning that the dealership just changed the oil a few days earlier, I mentioned they may have overfilled it. He shipped it back and sure enough it was over a quart overfilled. They drained the oil and replaced the clamps.

Now, once again, this weekend he called me with the same problem. Car on the side of the road, both intake tubes blown off.

Has anyone experienced this? It's possible that they overfilled it again, but it sounds like a backfire of some sort.

Again, it's nearly impossible to diagnose without the car being here. But, now that it's a recurring problem, I figured I'd see if this has happened on any other cars.

I had it happen once, it blew the hose off due to a backfire, I put it back on and it never happened again, under a certain condition it will burble, engine hot, sat briefly off, and then cruising throttle off and high vacuum, it was noisy and scary, but no harm done.

it has a funky clamp that is designed for a single use so you have to slide it on with a screwdriver or similar.

    Interesting.

I'm a bit concerned that it happened twice to his car. Wondering what would cause the backfire - mixture issue or timing? Mixture would likely trigger a CEL, but possibly timing? Valves closing too early, building up unspent fuel? Just spitballing.

Knock on wood, I drive mine every day - city, long highway trips, etc. Hasn't happened to me. It runs the same every day, regardless of temperature, etc.

Weird...i'd check timing, if it's otherwise stock

I've never heard of this happening and my car was overfilled when I got it so of course I had oil in my intake. I noticed you said that they drained the oil...but mentioned nothing about cleaning the oil out of the manifold. If that condition could cause that (seems extreme), then they did nothing to alleviate the actual issue. Draining the oil wont clean it out of the intake, and I'm surprised that if that is the issue, there aren't MAF codes, etc.

I agree and I told him last night that the oil could coat the intake and make the tubes more prone to blowing off, but it's unlikely that the high oil level cause it. He also told me that he has a CEL. How can your car leave the dealership with a CEL and no explanation? When I get a CEL, I'm in the garage until I find the cause! Well, it's back in there now and he should get a report card today.

Those hoses get taken off and not correctly reinstalled, have a vacuum leak, back fire and blow the hose off. Also they use one time use hose clamps and the kids try and reuse them not allowing the hose to go back on properly. I keep normal Norma hose clamps around in all the intake hose sizes. The crimp on clamps are stupid.

Also 360s are known for intake gasket leaks and that can cause backfiring too.
