Just found markings & pointers on the T-Belt cover backing plate. I have not seen this anywhere online. If I line up the rear cam viewing through the oil filler all these other marks seem to line up pretty good. But engine is definitely not at TDC. Is the timing ok per the previous post or should I rotate the engine back to TDC, then move the cams back to this position. seems pretty simple. Am I missing something here ? As mentioned, the engine turns over just fine with this current set up.

The car has not been started for 15+ years and I have a receipt for the Belts being changed just 600 miles before it was parked. So it was driven for at least 600 miles with the current timing. Would love to get some feedback on this. See attached photos of all timing marks.

    Thanks

Your TDC and cam marks seem to line up ok. The TDC on the flywheel mark is the line between the PM and the 14. In your picture, you are slightly to the left of that line, more on the 1. If you lined that mark up precisely, the cam mark would likely line right up. I think some paralax when viewing the other marks in your pictures makes them look further off than they are?

There may still be some paint marks on the timing belt gears and crank pully from the last time a belt change was done, most mechanics put paint marks to help with ensuring things have not moved around when putting on the belts and tensioners.

My Swiss market car does not have those backing plates, so I can't be sure how accurate those indicators are, others with the US cars will have to weigh in on that.

Here are some more accurate photos. It looks to me like the rear side cams are off by one tooth. I have the crank on TDC. The oil filler view shows the cam off by a little which is backed up by the pointer and mark on the end of the shaft. The forward cams are a little hard to get a straight look down on but I took a couple more photos with my scope and they appear to be dead on.

Big Question - would the car have run ok with this set up ? ie. one set of cams off by one tooth.

Unless anyone can tell me differently I think Im gonna move just the rear cams, one tooth backwards so all the marks line up.

    What you guys think ?

My understanding is the car would run with one tooth off, but would not run very well. Maybe that's why the car was put into storage?

I also understand that if someone previously degreed the cam, it may well not be perfectly aligned with these "assembly" marks and actually timed correctly.

All that said, aligning all the marks and doing new belts/bearings would seem to be a logical thing to do given the lack of history.
