I'm currently looking at an 85 308QV with records and reletively low miles, needing very little work, or a 88 328 with low 40s for miles (limited records) and in need of a tac and 1st gear syncro. I'm in favor of the 328 style.....is it worth the gamble? Neither of the problems for the 328 seem major....unless I should be thinking a 1st gear syncro is just the tip of a bigger problem? Thanks, this chatroom is just great!

    Ernie,
    I have had 3 308's and 2 328's. I also had a 94 348TB before deciding my current car (an 89 328GTB) is the best for me.

328's are better overall cars with better (though not greatly so) performance. A lot of the 308 mechanical shortcomings were dealt with in the 328. See archives for more detailed info.

Having said that, I would run from the 328 you describe. Synchros are very expensive to fix and more importantly, it tells me the car was driven by an idiot somewhere along the line. It is pretty easy to find really nice, no story 328's. I would wait. As far as the QV vs 328 debate, your budget may dictate what to do.

Is that the white 328 on Ebay? If so, run. You would be crazy to buy that car for that price.

Thanks for the replies, I'll write the 328 off and keep looking. Just recently decided to go the price for a QV and noticed the 328 for about the same......budget is always a concern for toys!

    I've driven a Carb 308, a 308 Euro QV, and a 328 - the 328 was the best car of the three. That's what I'm shopping for...

    I have both in stock:

1983 308QV red/black with ALL records dating back to 1986 when the car was first registered. Including a copy of the window sticker.
Has new bumper in the front, GTO style front bumper and wheels. Can put 308QV wheels on the car, your choice.
    asking $33,500

1989 328GTS ABS car. red/black, looks like a 10K Miles car. Truely excellent. Comes from a collector and is in prestine condition mechanically as well as cosmetically. All original.
    asking $ 49,500

Make me an offer I need to move both cars.

I chose a 328 over a QV but it was a real tough choice. I like the interior of the 328 better but the 308 bumpers add to the sleek look of the car (as opposed to the snubby 328 bumpers).

There were quite a few mechanical improvements in the QV, so the 328 mostly gives you more displacement.

I think it comes down to a matter of taste; the QV's exterior vs the 328's interior.

I think the 328's cooling works just a smidge better, with the hood mounted louvres rather than routed to the sides. But either one would probably be a good car, if you don't get an abused one.

Side mounted wing louvres from the 308 are what i would love on my 328,i think they look more agresive than the standard front wings of the 328.Also love the 308s deep front air dam,

Tach failure or reading several hundred or thousand rpm low is a common problem with the 328 and Mondial 3.2 series. It is a relatively inexpensive fix. You take it out, and send it to a speedometer repair shop, will cost $150 or so to fix.
