Does a K&N air filter do anything for a 348?

    I have always heard a 5% gain in horsepower when you install a K&N. Was wondering if you 348'ers have any experience with this and what you opinion is. Thanks!

    Some say there's a gain of 5-10 horses; others dispute that.

    More important though, K&N filter apparently sucks more
    "dirt"particles into your engine. This is why I decided against it.

    At least in my 3.2, on the dyno, the paper element cost about 10 hp and the K&N cost about 5 hp over no air cleaner. Would imagine the 348 would be similar.

    Definitely makes some more intake noise. Any other aspects will be hotly debated on both sides.... :)

    BTW, I have one on my 328GTS

    I found a greater increase in my performance when I installed an aluminum shift knob!

    A KN air filter will not give you a noticable increase in performance.

    What it will give you, is a longer lasting filter, but you'll have to buy the 'rejuvenation' kit for it to do so.

    In my estimation, KN over-evaluates it's product!

    I have used them in my TR and 360. Technically, not sure of the advantages other than what they advertise.

    A fresh wash and wax will probably give back 5 HP, especially if you also do the bottom of your car as I do from time to time. (I know, get my head examined).

    ou, ou, I just realized that I have a brand new aluminum shift knob going on my TR, and will be rolling it out this spring with some other changes too. I will not be able to trace the real contributor to any performance improvement although I believe the real change will be from the low restricition Borla exhaust system I installed. NO CATS and nicer plumbing!

    The valve caps are worth at least a 15 horsepower gain by themselves with a titanium shift knob I'd say at least 35 hp gain :) Now if you really want to make it fast switch to Italian Air in the tires :)

    I was informed that the K&Ns are likely to contaminate your "Hitzdraht-Anemometer" (this is the German word, I am talking about the device that measures how much air is streaming into your engine ...) with silicon. This in consequence will affect its function.

    So I decided against K&Ns.

    Well, if any HIPO air filtration device really worked VS the downside, then every manufacturer would already have them as original.

    I suppose if you take off all filtration, you might pick up an incremental increase in HP.

    But, I think you are asking if there is any downside to the modification.

    Well, if it's dusty or sandy climate, of course there is. At the 1/4 mile , there is no filtration at all.

    Sooooo... If the climate is favorable, I'd use one! Lots of sand here in Florida, so I don't use one, as much as I'd like to.

    They do have a great sound when that intake gulps air!
