The one time I did get an off-line pop up is was for an anti-pop-up software.

    Somethings just wrong with that.

Clear your cookies. I've had it before too and that took care of it. Usually a cookie is calling back to a server dishing them out to you.

Stopzilla can be had for 2 weeks free, do a search. It stops everything. It may block a window or two that you want open, hold down the shift key {or the key which is the default} and you should be ok.

cookies don't do this. they are only written and read, they do not have any other function.

don't forget to do the updates on spybot before running it!

a popup blocker doesn't do everything. spyware/adware can still get on your system. I recommend google's toolbar: http://toolbar.google.com and running spybot/adaware both - after updates to clean up the system. good luck Will.

That looks like messenger service advertising/alerts as enjoythemusic said, the solution is go to control panel then administrative tools, then "Component Services" then click on "Services (Local)" in the list that comes out scroll down until you find messenger then right click on it, click on properties then click Stop and finally where it says "Startup type" select disable, click OK and that should work...
    hope that helps

It really does look like the Windows Messenger exploit; however, I do not see how pop-ups could come up when NOT connected to the internet. He did say that when he unplugged his modem the pop-ups still appeared.

well you could try also... start>run then type "msconfig", then click OK go to the tab named "Services" look on that list for "Messenger and disable it" then restart , when you are back on, a message will come out just click dont show again and click ok, that seems to work, i just tried it and it seems to have the same effect as the previous method. Still is weird that messenger didnt show up on the previous method... it must be there.. anyways thats all i can think of for now...

he does says that even when the modem is not connected the ads come up, but if you see the screenshot he is online, so im assuming that is what i think, is really unusual for a spyware/adware to work with no connection to the internet.
