I'm trying to put together a list of race and street cars, that used Ferrari engines. I think the street cars list is short (Lancia Thema?), but the race cars is rather tricky, so how about some help please?

Here is what I know roughly:

    - There was a Minardi F2 (?) with a 246 engine
    - Lancia Stratos
    - Prost F1 engines were Ferrari, but what year?
    - Sauber F1 engines are Ferrari, but since when?

I bet there is more to this.

Going from my decaying memory, I believe it was 2001 for the Prost F1 and it's been since 1997 (??) for the Sauber.

Wasn't the Lancia Stratos a Dino engine? And if that's the case, does that kind of make it a Ferrari designed but Fiat built motor a la' Fiat Dino Coupes and Spiders?

I think you're right on Sauber since 1997. I have found old news stating that Prost got Ferrari engines for 2000 and 2001, but I found contradicting statements that they used Peugeot in those years.???

Stratos used the Dino engine, whether that makes it Fiat or Ferrari is close to a religious war. It is Ferrari in my book.

Agreed. Keep the peace. Anyway, I would take either one.

I heard the same thing about Prost - Peugeot (2000) & Ferrari (2001). Maybe there was a change during mid season on the engine supplier (just speculating), for Prost were going through hell at that time.

Bill Harrah once had a Jeep Wagoneer with a Ferrari V-12 in it that was called a "Jerrari". It had a rectangular shield like the Ferrari one, but with a figure of Eugene the Jeep instead of the cavallino rampante!

Then there was the Ferrari chasis powered by a Judd? in the endurance races a few years back, actually did quite well. They removed the stock Ferrari engine from a 333 (I think) and put in the Judd, something about Ferrari not wanting to help in the tuning, or something like that.

For some reason I thought the 4.2L V8 in the Maserati was a Ferrari engine.

Well, let's put it this way: Only in official cars. The Sauber F1 with the Ferrari engine wasn't built at the factory, but is an official "product". The Jeep or eg. the Norwood 308 with a Chevy (?) block is not.

Yes Jay, due to Ferrari focusing on F1 the 333 series didn't get any support anymore and ended up putting Judd (Honda) engines in the back. How sad.

Anyway, I'm looking for the opposite: Ferrari engines in other cars, especially race cars. The mistery about the Prost F1 is still unsolved.

Hmmm, I thought the Ferrari engines is the Sauber were built and maintained by Ferrari but badges as Petronas, as part of a big money making deal for Ferrari, like they had for Prost for a while (the last year or 2 of Prost).

There also was another Italian team a few years ago which I thought had Ferrari engines too ... cannot remember the name but many F1 sites have all this detail.

According to www.f1db.com the following cars used Ferrari engines (other than Ferraris ;)):

    Cooper T45 1958,1959,1960,1961
    Cooper T51 1959,1960,1961,1963
    Cooper T73 1966
    Dallara BMS-F192 1992
    De Tomaso F1 1963
    Lancia Ferrari 801 1957
    Lancia Ferrari D50 1956
    Lola T93/30 1993
    Minardi M191 1991

I do not believe the Coopers, De Tomaso and Lola but the others are possible.
    Ofcourse add Sauber and Prost.

To confirm the Prost with Ferrari engine (www.newsonf1.com):
Prost were Honda powered in 1997, Peugeot powered in 1998, 1999, 2000, Ferrari (Acer) powered in 2001, 2002 over and out :(

Of course you're right: The Sauber drive with "Petronas" engines and the Prost with "Acer". Wink, wink.

Thanks for the list of the cars with Ferrari engines, very helpful.

I'm still puzzled over the Prost deal: I read the team had Acer engines in 2000 and 2001, but I also read they had Peugeot in 2001. I vaguely remember they were running out of Francs and so probably didn't pay Ferrari. Maybe a mid season engine swap?

There WAS a Cooper-Ferrari, or rather two - a T51 with a 4-cylinder 2500cc from a 555 Super Squalo in 1960 (known as the Cooper -Castelloti in tribute to the late driver) and a 1966 car which comprised a 1965 Cooper F1 chassis with the engine from a Drogo-bodied 250GT, built and entered by J. A. Pearce and driven by Chris Lawrence in the 1966 British and German GPs.

There was a Formula 2 Chevron-Ferrari as well, with a V6, can't remember the year.

Also ISTR another IMSA car at Daytona with a 308 engine, and in Group C from 1983 to 1989 the Lancia works team cars used a development of the abortive Indy V8 Ferrari turbo, enlarged to 3200cc IIRC.

A bit of Googling should get you some more details.

Checking on the 1966 F1 Cooper-Ferrari, it was a Cooper T73 chassis and had the engine from Ferrari 3729GT. The car and engine were destroyed in a fire in 1967.

A Formula 2 team named Scuderia Trivellato used both Chevron and Ralt chassis with V6 Ferrari engines around 1978.......the engine was a bit controversial because the factory supplied them with a dry sump which was so deep the team couldn't fit it low enough in the car, so modified it.

When Minardi had Ferrari engines in 1991, Ferrari were at a low ebb and Minardi out-qualified them at least once and IIRC got a third-place in one GP - fat chance of that happening now!
