I think i need to shed a bit of light here.
The film was shot in the late 60 early 70. The film maker is claude lelouch who is otherwise known as one of the leading french film makers (yet still a bit less famous than S. Spielberg).

Anyway, there is a legend surrounding this movie. Among others : a F1 pilot made the driving, the car is a 275 GT B 4, Claude lelouch was jailed after the first screening.

Thing is that - being born in paris - what it seems is that the film is giving a great impression of speed by actual relative speed between the cars is not that big. Moreover, given the distances, it's clear the car is not that speeding as well. The soundtrack is glorious but clearly post - synchro... just count the number of up shifts and downshifts and it beccomes obvious that there is something woerd of the car's got 7 speed.

Still great movie but more like a joke .... very clever joke !

 

I was under the impression that the car was a Porsche, but I do know that it was shot on a holiday (Bastille Day) and the film maker did catch some grief from the Paris cops.

From an entertainment point of view, it is an interesting use of a continous shot.

Does this qualify as an example of "good driving?" In my opinion anybody who drives like that on the street in uncontrolled conditions deserves the motoring equivalent of the Death Penalty. Idiots like that create a negative impression for our sport. And the weaker minded in the motoring hobby may be inclined to emulate that kind of stupidity.

If you have a high performance car, take it to a controlled situation to exercise it. Excessive speed on the road is as stupid in a F-car as it is in a Honda.

I did not see that movie, but I did see the trailer for the various Ghostrider movies shot in and around Stockholm. Absolutely crazy motorcyclist racing through Stockholm on some incredibly fast bikes with the cops making futile attempts to catch him. Close to 300 km/h weaving through through traffic, crazy.

 

Ive never seen it. How would one go about seeing such a nice film.

 

Chris, I know you can buy it on the usual video sites. As far as seeing it for free, I'm interested in that as well.

 

As mentioned it's a bit of a spoof. The car goes fast but nowhere near the speeds claimed.

The sound was dubbed on later and you can tell the real speed by looking at the white lines on the road and the parked cars.

Still good though.

There is another film of a guy on some mad superbike going round the autoroute around paris and hitting close to 200. Apparently he died while filming another run trying to break his record.

Then there's the infamous F40 in Japan....

Ive read on another forum that the story that he had been killed was started by the anti-speed lobby, and that he is in fact alive and well accourding to a friend of his the forum.

 

Car is widely *rumoured* to be a 275GTB, since that's sexy, but also rumoured by those in the know to be a white Mercedes sedan. Whatever you believe its a very captivating piece of film. A single shot, great sound, you'll watch it again and again to try and work out whether it is "real" or not. If nothing else its provocative!

I recommend buying it.

I came into posession of a copy of this a while ago. I'm rather dubious that:

a) It's actually driven fast, it looks quick, but I think it's just a trick of the camera positioning, the speed relative to other cars on the road isn't obscene.

b) It's a 275. You don't actually ever see anything to confirm it and the sound was probably dubbed on afterwards, the gear changes didn't sound quite right to me, but I've never driven a 275 so what do I know?

It's still well worth watching though as it's fairly legendary.

 

The dubbed over soundtrack is completely ridiculous - watch it carefully, there are so many parts where the car is redlining going up through the gears, and sounds like its flat out in top - yet appears to be going no more than 50mph.

In the beginning going down the first 'straight' before it hits the roundabout it is passing the other traffic (70's bog standard cars) at no more that 20mph faster than them - yet the engine is screaming in top gear.

Towards the end the car goes down a narrow side street at 20 - 30mph tops - yet the guy runs through 4 gears or so redlining in each gear.

The soundtrack is truly laughable.

 

I've seen it and agree re the gear changes - they aren't in sync with the picture from what I remember.

Oh, man, it was so awesome...! i've never heard such sounds...! It was incredible...! Beautiful, beautiful music, INSANE driving, all wrapped up in less than ten minutes... It was unbelievable... i'm a different person because of it... Wow...

Yeah, it really is a great vid. Hate to be like the kid who told you the truth about Santa Claus, but... there are a lot of stories about this movie that say it was staged.

But who cares. It is a hoot to watch.

I think i saw that, is it just the front of a Ferrari going through the streets and thenhe finally meets this lady. If it is THAT IS ONE OF THE BEST VIDEOS EVER.

LMAO...! i haven't laughed that loud from reading something on here in a while... i really did "lol"...
Rob, i can actually recall the threads about Rendezvous and the myriad of suppositions related to the authenticity of the what the movie conveys... Some say it was a motorcycle, with a sound track laid over; some say Lelouch made enough money from his previous film to buy a Ferrari and, after doing so, was introduced to the mounting camera that was purportedly used in the movie; others say, the whole thing was staged; i am quite familiar with all of the various theories about the movie... In fact, that's one of the things Gerald and i discussed after we watched it... No one knows for sure and that's good enough for me...

 

By the way; i haven't used the search feature on this software yet as there are other ways for me to find whatever i've needed to look for, but the search feature on the software for the last version of FerrariChat SUCKED... If the search feature with THIS software is anything like the search feature of the previous software, i don't think i'd find what i'd be looking for if i DID ever use the search feature...!
