painting 328 mirror housing

I was thinking about painting the black mirror to red on a 87 328. Can anyone tell me if they have done this if the paint has peeled or chipped. Also how does the mirror pivot. Is it on a ball socket or does it move only horizontially in and out. The body shop indicated that painting around its point of movement might cause the paint ot chip. Any close up photos of the mirror would be apprecitated.
