My wife and I would like to make a donation ($1000) to a good charity, preferably one dealing with helping children. One where the money is actually spent on helping the children, and not on stuff like advertising, big bonuses for the top guys, etc.

We typically make a large donation to Make a Wish around december, so were thinking of a different one for this donation. If we can't find one, we'll just make another donation to Make a Wish.

    Any other good charities?

    Thanks,
    Dom

When I saw Gladys Knight and Smokey Robinson last weekend, there was a raffle that benefitted the United Negro College Fund. I always thought that was a pretty noble charity and I plan to donate to it someday.

Never looked into the specifics of it, but helping kids pay for college (especially those who might not attend because of their circumstances) seems worthy to me.

My father started and runs a large riding stable in Pennsylvania, focusing on theraputic rehabilitation of mentally and physically handicapped individuals,
most are children, at least when they start. It is a great facility, and donated money will be well used. My father has donated his salary back to the bussiness for as long as I can remember (I don't know what he is living on), (we are not a wealthy family).

The best charities are the ones in your own town. If you want something worldwide, my wife and I tend to give to Doctors without Borders.

This is a charity that builds schools for extremely poor children in the Ogoniland region of Nigeria. The last I read they had around 400 students in the 2-9yr old range in their primary school and nursery programs.

It was founded by a Professor I had in college. They have zero overhead. Every dollar goes towards new buildings, materials and operating expenses. I believe the primary school cost around $10K to construct, so Im sure $1K would go pretty far over there.

Also, private schools in your area are always looking for money as well. They typically live off of the interest of your donation, which adds up to a bulk in a bank account somewhere.

Having a pediatrician in the family I can relay that one of the hardest things is to see a kid with cancer. Mine are healthy, but I cannot even imagine what it is like....
In a few years I plan to organize a car event where the proceeds will go to this cause. This year, I will donate a car (albeit a cheap one) to a local charity. I try to find ones with small operating/giving ratios and where I know the person running it and trust him not to spend it on Alpine vacations.

There's always the "Youngins Who Need Rossa Memberships" fund. Mine's still a few dollars short. Maybe I'll start brokering Shell/Ferrari F-1 sticker sets for the $$.
