How can I - or even can I - safely bleed the freon out of my A/C; going to remove it completly for now to do timing cover bearings and radiator rebuild.

Mark, if you are talking about your 82 308, you can just move the compressor out of the way.
But if you feel the need to remove it, stop by any licensed A/C place and let them recover the freon before you start the job.

It takes a special pump to reclaim it. As mentioned, any licensed repair shop has them.

    MarkG,
As recommended, go to an A/C shop & have them remove it. They'll give you credit for the removed FR12 which you can then use when you have the system refilled. The system holds a couple of pounds of FR12 which is going for about $70/lb these days!
