considering the fact that a F1 doesn't even have an engine of it's own but a BMW borrowed motor instead. what do you people think? at least does the Mc Laren have any charisma?

Um, that "borrowed" engine was specifically built for the car. It's somewhat similar to Ferrari outsourcing their transmissions.

I'm pretty sure a car with no electronic aides (ABS, etc), weighs very little, and has unassisted steering has plenty of "charisma".

Get behind the wheel of the McLaren and the "bland styling" fades far into the past. The thrill it gives is almost indescribable. The sound of that "specially purpose built" engine will blow you away. And it can be driven daily, that is the special part.

As exotics that can most certainly be compared but they both meet special niche areas individually. I would love to have one of each. That would be fine with me........

I clearly recall they say that engine was taken from then BMW 760 . just like the early Viper stole it's engine from a Dodge truck

Um, YES, they do -- the F1 transmissions, anyhow. When the Aston Vanquish was released there was an article in Car & Driver which mentioned the fact that both the Ferrari paddle system and the Aston paddle system were built by the same company.

Ferrari make their own transmissions. The F1 tranny is the same unit as the manual 6-spd tranny.

    its a knife with 2 sides ..

Technology has moved on but so have regulations and all that junk that can come from our beloved gvts ...

The Enzo has to meet much tighter rules and its a WORLD car where as the F1 didnt have as much tech available back then and wasnt road legal in the US. Plus it was sold for 1M$ ...anyway..

Andrew who would take an Enzo over an F1 in less than a heartbeat :)

    Urraco,

You heard entirely wrong. Gordon Murray worked with BMW to have this engine developed specifically for the McLaren F1. It is designed entirely different from any engine they had built before or have afterward. The 760?? could only hope to have an engine of this magnitude. There has been a lot of discussion on this board about this and I think that if you will check back you will be able to draw your own conclusions about the engine history. If I were you I would check my source just to see how reliable they are. They are absolutely, flatout (You like that Jon??), without a doubt 100% wrong on this one.

I know this car well, have driven it a lot and known it since 1997. Check your sources......:>)

Look at the archieve thread above. The engine was made for the F1 and did not come from the 750.

Styling? I think it's one of the best looking cars ever made.

Also, you have to see it in person to appreciate the size. It's really compact, in great proportions. 360 looks like a giant by contrast. The MC is just perfect.

    Thanks for the pics.

I'm not sure if I remember, but I thought I saw photos of one at a golf course and it had the gold foil engine bay all bright and clean, with a bright purple paint job???

    Anyone remember those?

yeah, Isn't just the paddle shift system developed by Magnetti something or other? I'm pretty sure Ferrari makes their own gearboxes.

OTOH, doesn't Brembo make their brakes?

Tell me that 360 doesn't look bloated by comparison.

360 looks bloated next to a Gallardo also. Gallardo and the F1 would be cool to see side-by-side.

On the bright side.... a 360 does look sleek next to a 911.
