I am in the process of buying a 328 and I was wondering what people had to say about the following cars which are currently available in the UK (see below)

I also have the following specific questions:

    1) What is the value pre-ABS vs. ABS model 328's - i.e. is there any difference in their value and why?
    2) What milage should be targeted - I will drive the car on weekends and want a low milage car for its condition, but not one that has had too little use where pipes, seals, etc have hardened / perished.
    3) How can I tell if a 328 has been in an accident
    4) What are average UK-based running costs likely to be assuming nothing goes wrong (insurance, maintenance, etc.)

All comments and advice very much appreciated - Thanks

Thanks Chaa, however after seeing pictures of you reving a TR to 10 000 rpm in 1st, 2nd & 3rd does make me question how the 328 might have been drive;)

Ok mate never mind. But how do we all know how a car has been driven when bought i bet the magority are riden hard, then sold with the words"carefull owner"Funny thing is i has thrashed 360, lambos,Jags, SL55s and the current Bentley W 12, somewere down the line there will be people who will say several carefull owners. But hey good luck in your search. The TR was sold to a guy in Wales and is still going strong, boy what an engine.Noony, you one of the few who think that dude, nice one. Yes i can fit in the 328 and only wish i could keep it but i cant keep both. Its a tight squeeze but i love it.

I sold one recently with 50k on the clock and it drove beautifully.

The main thing is condition and maintainance. Watch out for rust too. The pre-ABS ones have concave, and some say more attractive wheels. There is little, if any difference in value; mileage makes the biggest difference. I've seen some ropey low milers very optimistically priced, so buy on condition and history (ideally supported by bills)- you might be able to net a bargain one with more miles showing.

Remember they are quite old cars now (even the most recent is 14 yrs old) so an average of only 2000 miles per year would show 28k.

That said, come resale time, the punters do love a low miler, in red of course.

No easy way of seeing if they've been crashed/repaired. Whatever you decide to do, I'd strongly recommend having an inspection done by an expert.

    Good hunting.

Chaa, you obviously have a little more cash than I. Its all risk and reward - driving "spiritedly" is fun, and it you can afford the engine dropping on the road there is no real risk. But in my case ....

However, I fully understand how everything becomes a "owned by little old lady, who only drove it to chuch and back" car when it gets sold!

I owned one up until 3 years ago an '87 GTS

    1. As Robert said not much difference, it was a very early version of ABS and personally I personally prefer the Concave wheels of the <88 models

    2. I was told by more than one specialist that the engines are at their best at >29k plus, again as Robery says, any less and you could be looking at poor seals etc

    3. Get a specialist to inspect it, it'll cost around £400 but money well spent ot ensure a good one, imagine the price for putting good a bad one!, I'd ask Mike at QV London in Ascot to look one over, he says it as it is :)

    4. Annual service at a specialist will be around £500, insurance for me was £400 pa for 5k miles, every two years on 328's I think they need Cam belts which is cheap but if the valve clearances need doing htis can be 15 hours labour @ circa £50 per hour

    in addition
Get one with Aircon and a repeat I know but get it inspected by a specialist even if it's a trade or spercialist sale, if the dealer won't allow it or questions why you want it then walk away, as your list shows there are plenty to chose from

Guys, thanks for the advice - where do you think values are? Do you think it it feasible to get a 20 - 30k mile 328 with full service records for £30k (max)?

Also, for those of you that have bought Ferraris (I hate the abreviation F-car - Enzo was not Mr. F, he was Mr Ferrari!!!, and his team was (and is) Scuderia Ferrari, not Scuderia F!!!) before have an idea of what discount there may be buying privately as opposed to through a dealer and how much one can negotiate around the dealer's offer prices?

    Thanks again for the help!

Errrmmm I meant was the person who bought it a dwarf, as I saw a Trossa in North Wales last week being driven by what looked like a pair of hands, until this guy got out and must have been all of 4'11"

Not sure how to get the little grey box, but I'm commenting on this:

"These cars are designed to be revved hard ( god if you pooded everywhere buy a Fiat and save a lot of money)"

360Spiderman, you are right - these cars are designed to rev hard. And that is exactly the point! They are designed to rev to certain limits (even if that is "hard") and that is why they have rev limiters. Revving them beyond their design limits just means significant risk of damage and premature wear.

I think a TR has a red line around 7500, so 10 000 is almost 50% beyond design specs. Rather a lot, especially seeing that no engine, even a Ferrari is imune to misuse

best way to buy any Ferrari (or any low volume high performance car) is to

    A. get a respected and recomended specialist to look it over for you ( known as a PPI)
    B. get the car HPI'd before you buy it
    C. ask here giving details of the car your looking at (number plate, chassis number etc)

Chaz is pretty spot on that most cars at some time have been driven hard (328's are at least 15 years old)

where abouts in the country are you looking ?

Heres somthing funny, a frend of ours is a very, very well known and respected ferrari dealer, restorer and services ferraris, all of you will have heard of him, and you would not think twice about buying a ferrari from him becourse of his rep..........well he buys and sells our groups ferraris. Well Picture this,a 1992 Tr in perfect condition, unblemished paint work perfect leather full service history with spotles engine bay and open to any inspection with only 6000 genuine miles on the clock.....SOLD!! with 12 months waranty. Well that was the very same one i owned, to this day its new owner happly tootals around in it on a sunday morning, happy in the knowledge that his car was brought from a reputable dealer. And in fact the TR engine was used in the F1 cars and had a higher rev limmit that the road cars, and i never ever said that the car did this all the time OR that it was sustained for any thing other than a second or so.I have said this in another thread only last month but there are alot of people with money who only buys exotics for the summer sunshine, thrash the **** out of them and resells them at more or less the same moneys. We have alot of frends who buy there cars at trade price thrash them then sell the on at a huge profit. I think some of us should take of our rosso specs and get with the program. You think i ride my bosses and my cars hard you should see me ride bikes. Oh yea before there are moaners and P***sers about useing someone elses cars the boss know!!! He likes to be there when i U & J turn and drive hard, in this country or abroad at one of his villas, part of the job description see......and S**t i even get paid for it. Though i am looking for a new safer job in an office.....not! Hey 360spider,the reason i train not only with weights but attend CP, EP and CRW (close protection courses)for the last 14 years is becourse in my game condition and knowledge sells. I have never ever drank alcohol but at times i wish i did, do ya fancey takeing me under you wing and showing me the ropes....but you will have to keep me under controll and carry my limp body home again. LOL.

I'd have thought £30k would buy you a nice one privately; you could certainly spend less and buy a 40-50k one privately.

Dealers are certainly open to offers (I got a v good discount on my 355 from MSL) but no doubt they're still making a good profit! Bear in mind you will get a warranty and usually a service included in the dealer price, plus many snagging points will usually be seen to. In terms of how much they might negotiate, try your luck. Also, keep on top of their stock; if they've had one around for a while, they might be more flexible- I've noticed that Talacrest have had a silver 29k mile 328GTS for some time...

I'm sorry but that's simple not true....THE only 180 Degree V12 used in a Formula 1 car was way back in 1964 in the 512 F1, and that was only a 1,496 cc unit specifically designed for racing. Nothing from the 365 GT4/BB 4.4 unit or the later 5.0 litre 512 BB/BBi, Testarossa, 512TR or F512M have ever been used in F1 !!! and in fact this engine DOES NOT lend itself to high revving. Chaz you may be a big lad, But some of your posts are woefully inaccurate.

Steve 328, i am only going by what smart arces like your self told me on this very site when i reved the TR beyond standard. And what the F**k has my size got to do with anything. And hang on is the boxer engine a flat 12 and not a V12, or do you know somthing the reast dont?.......easy to make a mistake is it not.
