Dangerous Links on this board...BEWARE!!!

I was wondering why I was not seeing a few of these sites come up. We have so many security layers and programs at work, one of must keep catching what you have been experiancing.

Do you use a spyware remover? You can also reduce it my using a browser other than IE. I use FireFox (a streamlined version of Mozilla) and don;t have problems.

Install a firewall.
Install anti-virus software.
Turn off the messenger service.
Install ad-aware.
Install the google toolbar and enable the blocking of pop-ups.

You might also have something like eGain crap-ware installed on your computer already. There's software out there that can check your computer and tell you if you have such stuff. To have it cleaned out, you need to pay and buy the software, but it's relatively straight-forward to remove it yourself if you know how to edit the register and blow away registery keys. So just the free scanning service of the software and do the work manually or buy it and have it do the work for you. Do a google search on "automatically remove eGain software and other spyware" to find it.

Mine has been doing this at work from time to time. I thought it was a new (old) mouse, but it could be spyware...

I guess when you mess with the skanky _ussy you have to be prepared to get a bug

No, it's not a trick!! That's the way i scan my pc too.....i don't think it's poss to have it running in the background.

 

What links? It would be nice to know what links you are talking about.

 

i visit the sites i post links to on a daily basis ( not just porn sites). if there is a problem with something i post please let me know so i can do whatever it takes to eliminate the problem. i have had my firewall nailed a few times recently on here as well. but not in the the "porn" links. i use a router and a double firewall so its kindy off " too much" sometimes.

Besides LavaSoft and Spybot, I also started using WinPatrol

It monitors changes to the registry and asks for the user's approval before allowing such.

Also allows cookie blasting.

Base program is freeware, enhanced version is $20US

 

Im headed out the door, so just a few quick comments. just my .02, take it or leave it.
I have spent a decent amount of time as a network/computer technician... and I see more and more of this nasty spyware crap every week. seems lately that spyware causes more problems than viruses. you get six spyware programs running on your computer at the same time, you dont know it, and they start causing havoc. spyware and such are best removed from your system by downloading the Ad-aware program. as far as the messenger service, that seems to spawn popups, go to GRC.com, then to the downloads page, and look for kill the messenger. this Gibson fellow is a brilliant programmer, used by the government. his site has a lot of useful programs, you should check it out. and about the poster complaining of a "posessed" computer, i would install a Different version of antivirus than you have now, and make sure it is updated. chances are you have a trojan virus that got past your current viruscan software. good luck!

a few suggestions. 30-40 spyware infections per month is way too much exposure, not to mention the hassle and slow performance.

1. If you don't have your anti-virus software setup now to scan and protect on the fly, then you should. If your present AV software doesn't do this, then change to one that does...Norton, McAfee, Sophos are all good.

2. Run a virus AND spyware scan at least weekly, not monthly. Update your virus definition list frequently. The automatic subscription/update option (LiveUpdate in Norton) is well worth the annual fee ($30-50US)

3. Many of the more sophisticated viruses will actually shutdown your AV software (anti-anti-virus??). To be absolutely sure, you need to do a 'clean boot" from a floppy disk that is 100% uninfected, run your AV. Once you get the automatic scanning option functioning, the above process is no longer needed, but you MUST start with a clean machine.

I use Norton Internet Security. It offers considerable protection beyond AV alone, including firewall and port protection, without impacting performance. The other reputable companies offer similar full protection products.

I also use a router with a hardware firewall. While I do this partially because of the home network, routers are cheap and useful even for just one computer. For the geek, you can even put one in an old 486 computer. For others, just buy a router...Netgear, Linksys, D-Link, SMC. Easily <$100US.

Let's be careful out there.

 

When you install the Google Toolbar, you can turn on popup blocking. Very useful. I have never seen a popup I was interested in.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean there aren't some folks really out to get me.

 

Firefox also allows more control over cookies and popups than IE or even Mozilla.
