So what do YOU think their motives were for today's announcement?
On the surface it would appear that they want to keep prices high/higher. But, who knows what evil really lurks. Maybe the Bushies are cooking up a deal to make themselves look like heros when the negotiate a better deal and save the day. We now own the second largest reserve in the world......what the heck is going on???? Is there no paybeck for the $1B we spend a day over there?
OPEC is angry that we are trying to establish a democracy in their part of the world. If the experiment in Iraq is successful their way of life is threatened. By raising prices they hope to affect the US elections. A vote for Kerry is a vote for the Saudi Royal Family.
If OPEC wants Bush gone.... they will keep supply low for the next six months. Bush family and Saudi Royal Family have always been very close...hard to belive that Bush even pissed off his friends in the oil business? OPEC will pick our next prez
Oil should not cover your country's expenses. Those money belong to the Iraqi people. Yes, you are building up an so on, but those money is gonna be paid by the US itself. You started the war, now you can finish it.
One of the more uneducated (about the subject) posts I have seen. Would you like some reading (endorsed by epople on this board on both sides of the argument)? I don't mean to be insolent or derogatory, just pointing it out. --Dan
bill, you hit the nail on the head. see this thread that i started a while back for some more info http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11448
Interesting that Kuwait & Bahrain (IIRC) voted against this, but our "allies" the phuquing Saudis voted for it. Wanna counteract this move? Wanna have lower gasoline prices? CONSUME LESS GASOLINE. It is as easy as that.
Damnit, Dave! Does that mean I gotta trade in my 550 for a Dino!?! (No offense to Dino owners...love the lines...am jealous of Tony) --Dan
Leave aside whether the same folks that vote for Kerry drive SUV's (nothing is too safe for my family), somebody with a more sophisticated understanding of the world oil market should explain how we don't buy from one country in particular, but as part of a world market. Saying no to the mideast would be great, but is it possible, even assuming we tighten our belts, or go alternative fuel? Hey Jonas, just wait until we run out of pornography. Then we'll invade Denmark!
John The same as yours. To make more $. In 1929 gas cost the $10 per equiv. $. In Europe where it's priced higher people drive cars with higher MPG. In the US we waste energy. It's not surprizing as it's so cheap. That's one reason I own so many energy stocks. In the future I plan to take my dividends in high octane rather than cash. Bill ROTFLMAO Jonas Think about why the 4th of July is a holiday in your country or why you're able to type away instead of bending over for Hans...
we keep building bigger SUV's and Ferraris (as well as Mercedes, Porsche and Audi) gas guzzlers. Many of us wont consider saving any gasoline. We rely on our leaders to keep the prices at the pumps low...so we can enjoy our driving. And our big companies lead by raising prices with the lamest of excuses sometimes.. We can cut our consumption, and we can stop buying our gas from the big companies. Buy from the smaller ones and the big companies will find a way of lowering prices. Or, be prepared to pay much higher prices. In Europe, the prices are much higher. People try to conserve there because they cant afford to pay the price. We simply cant take over the entire world to keep our SUV's running.
Other major savings would come from, among other things: -turning off all office & home computers/printers/copiers/etc. at night -turning off all office building lights at night (ever driven around a major city at 3 AM and seen all the lights on in the high rises?) -carpooling when possible -not havinf stay at home parents to drive kids, in huge trucks, 400 yards to school bus stops, in fair weather, but instead walking with them -etc etc etc -setting home AC units at 74 or 76 F instead of 68 or 70 F -allowing your car to idle one minute on cold start up
all of the above, plus my favorite, making your next small car purchase a hybrid, either gasoline or (even better) diesel. we could cut the US gasoline consumption by 10pct if the fleet went to 5pct hybrid, and this would make significant difference in price. however, a small point of disagreement with you dave. i used to think russia, iraq, alaska, cda, etc would have alleviated our dependence on the middle east and the vens, but something occured over the last 12 months that is very worrisome, and that is rampant chinese energy, and specifically gasoline, demand. up 30pct year on year, and that is with not more than about 1 car for every 100 people - imagine what could happen if they continue this type of expansion ! they are eating up every new bbls that gets found. very scary. and they will connected to 1-2 russian pipelines within the next few years, so they will pay even less, ie no brake on demand. somebody needs to invent warp power in a hurry !
Believe it or not, another way to conserve energy is to use golf carts for local travel. Okay, now that you've stopped laughing, let me explain. The city I live in--Peachtree City, GA--is the largest user of alternative-power vehicles in the country. We have 90 miles of golf cart trails, with bridges and tunnels that carry carts over (or under) major highways. You go out to eat, shop and take your kids to school in golf carts. Most houses have a standard two car garage and a shorter golf cart garage. I'm surprised this idea hasn't caught on elsewhere. Sure, weather is a factor, but there are plenty of places with weather as mild or milder than Atlanta that could benefit from this. You have to experience it to believe it, but it is an enjoyable way to get around town that saves a lot of gas in the process.
sounds good. i also vote for WALKING ! or bike riding etc. unfortunately though, when you actually have to lug something around you have to burn some carbon......
One of the things that impressed me while visiting London was how much people walked. It would do our lard a$$e$ a lot of good to walk more, but then our cities are more spread out.
Walking more would be the best solution. Too many fat people already. Having said that, I've seen all the comments about oil, etc., OPEC's last gasp. The facts are that the Saudis are sitting on about 30 - 40 of all the world's oil. China is growing at about a 10% rate, and we import what, 7 milliion barrels a day. That is a prescription for vastly increased oil prices. I'm looking for an insight but I haven't been able to find a dealer with one in stock. Looks like a lot of people have already gotten the message. For me, it isn't the gasolilne, but because the HOV lanes allow two in a car with only two seats, the insight will save me 1 hour a day on the commute. It doesn't look good. I think that the Saudis are looking at GWB and decided that they owe him no favors, given the comments from his "base". If that's true, look for higher & higher prices. Art
Hey, dogface. OUR reserves, not Iraqs. You make me sick. We started the war, we *will* finish it. You & denamrk can go to h3ll.
A wholly useful and informative post, bravo. Please keep up with the very erudite and civil posts... they really make your point. (dripping with sarcasm, if you are too dense) --Dan
****head, re-read the thread. IT was the Iraqi oil reservers people was taking about. Please get a life instead of hunting down my posts in reply with useless garbage.
