I've never seen it but always wondered. I will never forget telling some Dutch F1 fans that were in my dorm of his death. They thought it was a sick joke & never kid about something like that again. When they found out the truth I'll never forget the look of disbelief in their faces.
A sad day, I wonder what the coverage will be like since the show is only an hour long and not the full race distance?
they can show it 1000 times, i will never look at it back........ I was there LIVE in 1994 and it was until now, my last GP. Greetings, vincent
I have mixed feelings about watching it. I saw it live on TV the morning of May 1, 1994, went for a run after the race never imagining that he'd be killed, it just didn't seem like something that could happen. Returned to, I think, a NASCAR race with a news ticker running across the screen, "F1 driver Ayrton Senna dies of injuries sustained ..." I couldn't believe it. I'd imagine very few in the US know who Senna was; I'll bet a lot of us carry that memory all our lives.
WCH - but you know, Speed Channel or whatever Fox is calling it these days, well... they have improved slightly. In the past few years, they've actually taken note that it is a bad thing to show the Speed News just before an F1 replay, where at the very end, because the people at Speed TV don't care, plug in a short, 15 second results on the F1 race just before the replay. It's worse than seeing spoiler posts on this board.
The ESPN coverage in the States cut to commercials and we never got to see the horrible scene in its entirety. People from Europe (where the feed was uninterrupted) told me, that they saw the pool of blood he left behind as they moved the body onto the stretcher. The Europeans pretty much knew then and there that it was all but over. In the US I had no clue and called my friend the next morning to see how Senna is doing. He broke the news to me. All I remember was that I was in tears at work. Nobody around me had an idea and probably thought it was a loss in the family. And in a sense it was. Years later I had the chance to pay my respects to him at his grave side. R.I.P. Ayrton.
I was in Brazil at the time, it was like the death of superman! You could hear a pindrop a thusand miles away. Tchau!
Schatten: I've learned to leave my computer and the TV turned off, and not answer the phone, until I see a race. I have too many well meaning, but fanatical, friends. Tifosi12: Interesting to hear about the European feed. And this was my experience, too: "Nobody around me had an idea" I ended up having to buy foreign newspapers to really find anyone who "got it." I remember meeting a Brazilian in June and spending an hour or so wallowing in the whole sad mess.
Its funny how somethings you remember like it was yesterday yet others you have a hard time remembering the details. The tragedy surrounding Senna's passing is blurred in my memory, yet I remember Gilles Villeneuve's death in 1982 like it just happened. I will be watching to see how SPEED handles what in my mind was a piviotal turning point in modern F1.
I have gone on vacation in Europe during a GP weekend (after 1994) and avoided all newspaper stands so not to see the results on Monday morning. Managed to come back to the US to my VCR and watch the race unknowingly. I got a Swiss newspaper about Senna's accident with all the graphic pictures. Not pretty. Stored it away in my F1 collection. Not that I'm too much into the goolish details, but as usual retrospectives never give you the full picture either. Kinda like 9/11 where I watched on TV people jumping to their deaths. Buy a book about it today and you won't find that in there.
Many feel the same as you Vincent. The great Journalist Denis Jenkinson said that was the last race for him for the short amount of time he lived. Greetings, Tony
i had no idea who senna was until about 3 years ago when i started watching F1, and as i was to young to rember or follow F1 then, i think it will be a very intresting watch, i have a clip of the crash, but thats all. i think i still dont realize how good he was yet...
Ten years already... Time flies... I can clearly remember that tragical weekend. First Roland Ratzenberger on Saturday practice... then magic Senna a day later in the race... Also the early days of M. Schumacher... Greets, Alexander
Interesting note made at the end... Senna had an Austrian flag rather than his home flag in his cockpit... had he won, he planned to wave the Austrian flag instead of his own... in honor of the loss of Ratzenberger earlier.
I distinctly remember sitting in my chair in front of the TV, in the dark, watching the race live (something like 5:30 a.m. US Pacific coast time). I remember thinking for some reason, as they pulled him out, and blood was coming out from his helmet, that he wasn't going to make it. It was a horrible day for the racing world.
My wife and I came downstairs late that morning. "Hurry up! Don't turn that TV on! We have to go NOW!" I turned it on anyway, and the scroll across the bottom of the screen said Senna was dead at Imola. Didn't hear what happened until late that day. I was sure he must have got mixed up in someone else's accident. I remember the cover story in Autosport the week before Imola: "Crunch Time in San Marino". "Senna: Can He Take the Heat?" "Is He Going to Crack?" I think he intended to win that race.... I still have my newspaper clippings from April 8, 1968. "Racing Champ Jim Clark Dies in Crash". It was 36 years ago this Wednesday.
That was it though, Senna intended on winning EVERY race he entered. He isn't like the Columbian Slouch or anyone else in the back of the pack in F1 these days. He was out there to win at all costs. That is why I say Kimi, even though he over drove the car yesterday, he has it in him to be the next big gun. He's out there to win, not to come in 2nd place. Only one way to describe Senna... on the back and in text of "The Death of Ayrton Senna" by Richard Williams* 'Once Senna was accused of blocking an opponent, But I am Senna," he said. Which sounded preposterous, until you thought about it. He was Senna, and the cultivation of humility in his working life would not have taken him to the places he found. * I have this in hardback, my brother picked it up upon it's release when he was over in the UK. Great book, but has been years since I've picked it up until now. btw, I have a few clippings, magazines and books from a few different countries as well regarding Senna pre/post passing. I can post a few pictures of items, but I am not going to break bindings to do scans of some of the items.
well... I managed to do some, without breaking bindings. Some of the images are scans from an Italian magazine called Pista. I only have two issues from the 93 season. Great photos in them as well from the days of Senna, Prost, Schumi and Hill. The zip file - that's the USA Today article. It's a full page article with misc. other items regarding racing in it. Although I cannot stand USA Today, it stands as the only newspaper that I have kept from this event. Hope you enjoy.
