So the other day, i was wondering, if the Italians use kilometers, why then is the Mille Miglia called the Mille Miglia...? Mille is mile in Italian... So then i found out that when they were first organizing the race, someone mapped out how the whole thing would go... Then someone else said, "Well, what are we going to call it...?" Then someone else said, "Well, how long is it...?" The reply was that it was 1500 or 1600 kilometers (whichever transfers over to 1,000 miles) and then the other person said, "Hey, that's a 1000 miles - we'll call it the Mille Miglia...!"

Anyway, i thought it was cool and figured since i found the answer, i'd pass the info along... Mine is really a rough translation of the story; if you want the specifics (peoples' names, etc.), let me know, i'll go get that info...

When I planned my Mille Miglia trip last spring I tried to follow the original route as much as possible (although without going all the way to Rome). I had the same question whether it was 1,000 km or 1,666 km. So to be sure I really did my own version of it I drove the rental car for something like 1680km in one week. Great area, lots of Ferrari places to visit, including of course...

NNO: I wouldn't want to piss in your biscotti, but "mille" is not "mile" in Italian. Mille = 1,000. Miglia = mile.

Someday you really should read Denis Jenkinson's account of his drive with Stirling Moss in the 1955 Mille Miglia. If you send me your address, I'll send you a copy to read - it's great! There was also a great story done by Henry Manney of his drive in the Mille Miglia, printed in Road & Track. Highly recommended.

I have several books on this road race and always noticed that many of the drivers and almost all of the officials and spectators are dressed up. Jackets and ties. Drive like Hell through small villages on narrow poorly constructed roads like you were going to work. Awesome.

I know this is a given, but it's sad to see real road races like this over. I wasn't alive during the era of the MM or Targa Floria. I really enjoy watching the old replays of it on Speed though. On the other hand that also shows how dangerous the race really was. The fans are just crazy standing in the streets the way they did.

Yes crazy and what ended it was stupid spectators removing a corner warning sign ... I guess to add to the excitement ... and this caused the big accident which killed many spectators and the poor driver (can't remember whom, but he lost his life too as did the co-driver) misjudged the corner.

Again the few ruin it for everybody ... but then they were hitting over 160mph on public roads so it was getting rediculous anyway ...

    Pete
