Willis, it would be cool, for sure, but probably not reliable; it IS in the parking lot of a gas station/mechanic shop... :)

These FIATs litter the midwest US landscape.

As JRV observed, "They were disposable when they were NEW cars!"

I broke down in the middle of nowhere Louisiana after a race in Lafayette. The guy who helped fix my car, Sunday afternoon, for $20 had one out back on blocks.
He said "I'm gonna restore it and paint it yellow"

Only then did I show a photo of my yellow 308GTB. He loved it.

For awhile there I thought I had stumbled into the set of Deliverance 2.

DES, what you are looking at is called a Pininfarina Spider. For the last couple of years of production (in the early 80's) Fiat sold the branding rights of its 2000 Spider (formerly 124 spider) to the Italian stying house of Pininfarina. Fiat continued to produce these cars with the coachwork being built by Pininfarina. Essentially you are looking at a very late model Fiat Spider. They were branded Pininfarina everywhere and to the best of my knowledge, do not have the word Fiat anywhere. Kinda like a Dino if you will.

DES, please tell me you're not thinking of buying this? They are the most unreliable pieces of crap ever assembled.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here jimpo1. Fiats are alot like our ferrari's (just not as expensive). If you are going to buy one first make sure you get a good one (i.e. do a PPI, service records, etc.). If you get a good one, shouldn't be too bad to drive and maintain. If it's a fuel injected car, it should be even more reliable. Should have the same issues as buying a similar year ferrari (i.e. mostly electrical issues due to bad grounds).

Nuvolari is correct, although I don't know that I buy the Dino analogy. Had a new 124 Spider when I was in law school (geez, 30 years ago!) and it was a nice, albeit flimsy, car. Not as nice as the Alfa that followed upon graduation, not to mention the Ferraris in later years, but pretty, in a 275 GTS sort of way.

Also, if you don't car about resale value, you can buy one pretty cheap, and update/modify cheap.

So, buy the car for $1000-2000, spend another $2000 to make it "right", and for $3000-$4000, you've got a fun convertible that can be driven daily, autocrossed, pick up chicks, etc. (Of course you'll never be able to sell it for $3000 but as I said above, who cares about resale value)

And, if you listen to Frank Parker, a ferrari/dino is just a fiat anyway... :)

    Thanks, James... :)

Willis, it's definitely NOT going to be my next car, but it WOULD be cool to have sitting in front of the house to drive around, on occasion... :)

Wax, Nuvolari, thanks... Very informative... Now i can go find the owner and conversate like i know what i'm talking about; maybe s/he will even give me a ride in it...! :) i've never ridden in/driven an Alfa...

Ed, ironically enough, that's a different 7-11; newly erected just minutes from my house... :)

"They were disposable when they were NEW cars!"
    LOL, Speedy...

Mikey, Pininfarina never worked with Chrysler... :)

Jim, no, i'm not buying it...

And, if you listen to Frank Parker, a ferrari/dino is just a fiat anyway...
    LOL, Dom...!!!

Fiat Spiders are great little cars. So what if they arent extremely reliable, what car was back in the 70s (as compared to modern cars)? They look great too! I regret not buying one. Couldnt have been worse than my Mustang.
