I agree, that car and the year b4 or after was my favorite shaped f1 car. The paint job did not equal the jps lotus or lotus honda though. As for the bmw powerplant, i remember watching interviews at the time with eddie cheever saying it was crazy what that engine put out in qualifying and he could not compete. Also thierry boutsen was joking how he had wheel spin in 4th gear doing about 150 at brands hatch. The height of the turbos was the height of f1.

Arh, proof that Senna did not accept not being the teams absolute number 1 BEFORE he even started in F1 ... interesting. Thus IMO Prost did not start this attitude at all as others have suggested.

Regarding driving for Toleman, in his first season in F1. In books I have read they have stated very clearly that Senna did NOT want to drive for a dominating team at first. He wanted to show his true ability first and then move to a successful team. I believe he did this in all the formulas he raced in and respect him for that ... because he could easily have just jumped into an already winning team and been fast. Instead he jumped into a piece of **** and looked fast and became a legend.

I watched him in the rain at Monaco. Like everybody else I was getting soaked in the rain (no covered grand stands), but it didn't matter. We could see how the Toleman was gaining on Prost. And we all loved it (well, I wasn't surrounded by French spectators). When they stopped the race, we all felt robbed of a victory. But the sensation was there anyway and everybody knew it.

Let's not forget that although Senna was catching Prost, the fastest man on the track was Stefan Bellof who was catching Prost and Senna at a rate that would have easily had him leading by race end. Bellof was truly a talent lost.

Yes Bellof was a lost talent, he was supposed to go to Ferrari instead in 86 but lost his life at SPA at Eau Roudge in the most unforgettable move I have ever seen there. There was a Camera on the back of Jackie I. 956 that showed Bellof spinning off and crashing. It was incredible.

Pete, your right that Senna at that time could not get with one of the top teams, however, he and Johnny Cecotto were equal as Number 1 drivers, when Senna went to Lotus he was Number 2 driver to Elio De Angelis in his contract but got the upper hand after the first race. The reason he felt that he should be Number 1 at Lotus the second season was that Lotus could not prepare to equal cars. I agree on onething about A.Prost he never had a problem with any teammate until Senna came along.
