I was picking up my 328 from a pre-purchase inspection here in WA and stumbled on this car that was also in the shop - I know folks on this board like to see the older cars and man, this is one beauty of a car!

Don't know who owns it but it was just so gorgeous - didn't have anything more than my pocket camera so I was limited in how wide an angle I could get so I could only stand a couple places - the whole shop was packed with cars but this one just stood out.

Don't know who owns it now. It was purchased new in 1967 from Luigi Chinetti Motors by a Mr. Peter Smith. At one time he lived in Malibu, CA but more recently resided in Holoaloa, HI. He still owned the car as of April 2003. Car at that time was in Seattle, WA but being offered for sale through a broker.

    i'll third that.

Nice to see someone is taking very good care.

I love the tail treatment. Can anyone tell me how these spoilers came about? Trial and error?

When was the first wind tunnel used to design a car?

    thanks for the pics.

    Don't know about wind tunnels.

The "spoiler" on the back is called a Kamm tail after Wunibald Kamm. He was a German aerodynamicist who designed the Kamm tail for the late 1930s BMW 328 race car, using ONLY math and seat of the pants driving...no wind tunnel.

If I'm not mistaken Dr. Kamm discovered that a cut off tail was as efficient as an elongated, tapering tail; but he did not invent the spoiler. That was invented by Richie Ginther, an American Ferrari driver, who had the Ferrari team affix a strip of metal to the Kamm Tail to aid downforce.

The story of how Richie Ginther "invented" the spoiler can be found on pages 26-27 of Cavallino Vol. 1 No. 2, the Nov/Dec 1978 issue.
