I have a 1983 Ferrari 308 QV, and the original Michelin trx tires aren't available anymore -- for a reasonable price that is. And looking on tirerack.com, I can find no decent performance tires in 220/55/vr390.
    Any suggestions?

Not too sure what you mean by decent, In the UK Dunlop do two not unreasonable tyres in the 220 or 230 size.

Same prob with for my 85Tr. Coker has em but $$$. If you want better and less expensive tires you may have to change rims.

I am not sure how you use the car, but if it were me, I'd bite the bullet, buy some 16 inch rims and get a good selection of performance tires. Ferrari UK have originals (I believe), others have repros.

I can't see that you'll negatively impact the sales value of the car unless it is a 95 point+ show car. You can offset some of the cost by selling your existing rims.

    Again, just my 2 cents

Scott, yes they are 390's Avon also do a tyre and while at a show recently I was looking at an Aston owned by Techic Tyres with Remoulds. The guy swears they give him no problems at all.

The Dunlops come out at <> £150.00 a tyre. Mich's are £250 a tyre, to me it's a no brainer.

There are cheaper tires coming from Colway in the UK.
Go to the website in Holland :http://www.colway.nl
Klik on "Performance" and scroll the page down. You will find 230/55R390 tires in the CM3 classe.
To find the price : klik on "KOPEN" in the right corner. Then double-klik on "performance",doubleklik on "zomerbanden" and klik below the page to find CM3 tires price : 76,43 €. + shipping.
Those are high performance reproduction tires, a good altenative when drive normal with your car.

Your best bet is the 328 wheels from Ferrari UK. Reasonably priced, great service from an Fchat sponsor.

Search the threads here on 328 wheels.

I would just buy the TRX tires. Even though they may cost $100 or so per tire more than 16 inch tires, at only a $400 savings per set of 4 you could buy 5 or 7 sets of TRX tires before you would even break even on the $2000 to $3000 cost you would spend to buy new 16 inch wheels. You would have to drive a lot of miles to need 5 to 7 sets of new tires. You probably won't even keep the car that long.

    Doesn't Tirerack (?) have them. Try their website ... cost is $207/tire + ~ $10 delivery/ tire.

Hmmm. My quote, at the time, was for more than $300 each over 16s.
Not including shipping - or the mind numbing wait.

It was better for me to buy 16" TR rims. - So far, I've only found a pair for the rear, but the savings in buying 16" rubber paid for the rims and I still have the metrics. And WAY more choices in tires!

Of course single lug wheels limit your choices in replacement rims. Now, I need to find a pair for the front...

Offset the cost of the 16" wheels by selling the 390 wheels is interesting. Any idea what they might bring???? Not sure who would want to buy them.....

    Carl,

i have the TRX tires/rims and seems i can not GIVE them away. Anyone with 1/2 a brain knows they are worthless due to the odd tire size :( New 328 16-inch rims from Ferrari UK are inexpensive too.

Will probably get the TRX here studded for winter driving (seriously).

    Sad, but true.

Avon stopped exporting their CR28 390s to the states a couple of years ago. Luckily I bought a set a year before that, & really like them.

Any chance you know an Avon dealer that would take a credit card order & ship them to the US? Even with the adverse $-pound exchange rate they'd be cheaper then the Michelin TRXs & IMHO are a better tire (more modern compound & reasonable tread design). Suspect he could sell 5 to 10 sets/year without much trouble.

This is strange that one of the larger independant Ferrari parts houses doesn't regularly stock them...seems there is a ready market for them. They'd just need to make sure they don't overstock and let them get too old sitting on the shelf...but you'd think they could sell 3 or 4 sets per quarter, then reorder. May be an opportunity for Dave at Sodacom's?

Some days ago 4 pieces 308 metric wheels at ebay-uk with starting bid for 150 £. Nobody offered any money...even when you give them for free, nobody wants them anymore.

If there are enough people interested I will see if I can sourse some Metric sized tyres her (uk), I work in and associated industry.

Failing that I can still check up availability and shipping costs if anybody is interested.

I honestly never heard of Avon metric tires, but then again, no dealer that I've ever contacted had either.

I'm saving the metrics in case I ever sell the TR and the new owner would want the original rims....

Avon are a small UK tyre manufacturer, they specialise in making tyres for top of the range cars, Jags, RR, Bentley, Aston up to the late 80's I guess.
They do make a range of smallere sizes. They are now part of Cooper tyres, a US company I think.

I bought 2 (240/45/415 -front tires) TRX tires on April 7, 2004, from TireRack for $220 each and $17.00 shipping for my Testarossa. Give them a call or send an email to TireRack, they may have your size. When I checked using their website, TRX tire didn't come up.
    Good Luck.

I need these for my Audi as well. Had great success and good prices importing them from
    http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/

I had to get the 240 x 390 as my wheels are 9.75"

The genuine article but Pds 88 each!

i recently bought a recondition set of 5 TRX 390 mondial wheels on
e-bay in the UK for £300, however they came with 5 brand new OE
tyre's with no milage on them!!
(about the cost of a pair of decent 16'' tyres..........)
and it keeps the car original!
just depends what you want i guess.

    Just looked at LongStoneTyres prices:

    Gadzooks:
    1220/55VR390 Michelin TRX 642 227 186.50 GBP = 341.460 USD

That's EACH before trans-atlantic shipping back to the US.

Hmm, my suspicion is that these are Coker tires exported to the UK.

Hopefully Cooper/Avon will decide to share with the colonies again before I need new tires.

Personally, unless one is hell bent on concourse points, DUMP the rims and get new 16-inch ones from Ferrari UK. Thin of the LONG TERM $$$ of new tires and also going with standard tires opens a wide range of MUCH better choices :)

Of course i have some TRX rims and tires for sale cheaper than you could buy 4 new tires. Bring cash :)
