My 348 SS comes with comes with chromed horses on the front and rear. I am considering replacing them with black horses. I know that it is not "origniale", but it might look better. What do you think? Also, does anyone have a source for the black horses. Cheers, Jim

that would depend on what color your car is; it seems to work very well with some combinations.

Red with black horses? No way man. That would look too funky.

Jim, if I recall correctly, earlier 348's had black horses. I know for a fact that earlier TR's had black horses.

Personally, (not that it really matters, but hey) I like the chrome horsey. :)

Until 1993 they came with black horses then with the GT models and the SS and CH series they changed them to chrome. The front horse BTW is not stock in either case. (let me rephrase that I believe not on the GT series but it did come on the SS and the CH.

    If I'm correct...
Before 1993 348's (tb&ts)had a black horse on the rear grill, none on the front grill... After that they (GTB, GTS, Spider, US SerieSpeciale, EU GT Competizione & Challenge) normally had silver ones both on the front and rear grill. They had to mark the fact that the car was "grown" or "improved/updated". This also happened when the Testarossa (normally didn't have a "cavallino" on the front grill, black on the rear) was replaced by the 512TR f.e. This last one had the silver horse both on the front and rear grill.
Of course, some owners changed/replaced this to match personal taste...

To answer the question, I like the silver horse better.

Black horses ware only carried by the racing ferraris. The only ferrari to have a black horse with no racing history was the 288 GTO as the series it was designed to race in, was banned. As far as I know, there are no factory 348's or other modern f-cars fitted with a black horse. No car subsequent to the 288 carried it.

My '86 TR came originally with a black horse in the back. I changed it to chrome. The black horse is flat. The chrome is not.

Keep the chrome. It looks better and it sets your car apart as what it is.

Actually, every 348 before the Series Speciale had black horses. Are you perhaps thinking about the fender shields with the black horses? They were were used only on racing Ferraris, and not on Street cars until the 288GTO, F40, F50, and became an option on later street cars.

    vty,

Having a black horse is your option. I've seen it being used on a 348 and it looked OK.

Try it. If you don't like it you can always chrome it again.

Jim- I agree with everyone else, I think chrome looks best. However, if you do decide to go with the black cavallino I have a rear one available (I just replaced my factory black cavallino with a chrome one).

All answers above are right, but don`t forget the other reason:
In 1988 & 1989 all european (don`t know about the US market) Ferraris were delivered with balck horses!
In memory of Enzo Ferrari, who died.

From an artist: Is there much chrome on the car? If not I would go w/ anodized or silk black prancing horses to match grills, trim, etc. I wonder if anyone wants to be as subtle as to go red on red like I did on my white on white 240Z emblems. Mabe not on a Ferrari.

Based on some F owners site in Japan, it was popular mod to match horse's color to the body color. Personally, I won't do this, but pics looked good. (unfortunately I don't know where the pics went in my computer, as I looked for it for the past 10 min.)

Jim, you can do whatever YOU please since it's your car. You want your 348 different from others, right?

Keep the chromed ones... more beautiful to me...

I had them on my 348 and they were much better looking, imo, than the black ones...

Chrome looks best on all colors, all models. The black matte doesn't stand out well enough. Nothing better than chrome glinting in the sunlight, moonlight, street lights, other car's lights..............
