    I recently learned that people from various geographical areas have certain language "quirks" that are actually naturally generated by native english speakers. The two examples I heard were:

    Central PA:
    That lawn needs mowed
    Those shoes need cleaned

    Upstate NY:
    So don't I
    - as an affirmation and analogous to 'so do I.'

    I thought that it was interesting that geographically, some of us have these little language quirks that most people would consider to be grammatically wrong.

    Appalachia:

    "of a night" or "of a day" meaning during, i.e:

    " Maybelle's bursitis acts up of a night"


    "right smart" meaning quite a bit,i.e.:

    "Theron's kidney stone hurts right smart"


    all together now:

    " Tollie's chiggers itch right smart of a mornin' "

    TX: Pretty much anything that comes out of some people's mouthes.

    My favorites are:

    Cut on/off, as in "Cut on that light so I can see."

    Fixin' to, as in "I'm fixin to get me a can of Skoal and watch me some Nascar."

    Despite all of its peculiarities, I do love Texas though.

    3 of my favorites...

    Ohioian's (mostly in cincy) instead of saying "excuse me" or other things if they did not hear what you might have said - they say "Please" - I have heard this a few places - but Cincy takes the cake in this.

    Ohioian's also often use the phrase "Mango" for Green Bell Peppers ... and I thought Mango's were a fruit?

    The other one that most people do in writting is spell the words "alot" - it should be spelled a lot.

    You guys are talking about my wife. When she says next weekend, she means the weekend after next. The weekend coming up is this weekend. Somehow, we have stayed married for over 26 years....
